Description

Winchester College is a boarding school for boys for kids aged 12 to 19 in the town of Winchester in HampshireEngland.

Facilities

  • The Chapel – remains central to the school community with regular services for boys and staff of a Christian faith. There are also services open to the public. 
  • Chamber Court – Now predominately used by those pupils known as Scholars who live in the school’s original boarding house. 
  • College Hall – where Scholars continue to eat each meal and where many school functions are held. 
  • Cloister – a medieval covered cloister. The stone benches allowed it to serve as a place of study in the summer, and generations of pupils have carved their names here. It served as an area for recreation, with the remains of medieval game boards incised into the walls. 
  • Science School – It is situated in a part of the campus overlooking the playing fields and water meadows. It houses extensive science laboratories and an observatory.
  • The medieval brewery is now the school’s library, the sanatorium is the Art School, the original gymnasium is the theatre, and the medieval stables house the school’s museum of art and archaeology, known as the Treasury.
  • Pupils of the Art School enjoy large, well-equipped studio spaces, divided into specialist areas of paint, print and sculpture.

Things to note

  • With over 30 sports and activities to choose from, whether part of the PE curriculum or an elective activity, there is something for everyone at Winchester. 
  • We have fifty teaching and practice rooms, as well as a fully-equipped music technology classroom, recording studio, editing suite, percussion studio and rock room. 
  • The Art School, Design & Technology Centre (Mill) and the QEII Theatre are open for recreational use, with a member of staff available to supervise. Pupils are welcome to use the facilities for their own projects, whether privately or academically motivated.
  • Outside study time, pupils have a huge choice of extra-curricular activities, clubs and societies within which to find like minds and fresh challenges. Many are founded and run by the pupils themselves. For more information CLICK HERE.
  • Pupils are encouraged to expand their horizons and participate in school trips. Some form part of academic courses, such as Modern Foreign Languages or History, and occur during term. Most optional trips take place during the school holidays.

Extra Curricular

Sport: Every afternoon, pupils can participate in a wide range of sporting opportunities. Our coaching staff consists of former international players and professionals, as well as current county and district level coaches.With over 30 sports and activities to choose from, whether part of the PE curriculum or an elective activity, there is something for everyone at Winchester. 

Music: Music is integral to the life of our school, giving pupils skills and experiences that last them for the rest of their lives.Concerts take place regularly. All pupils are given the opportunity to perform.Our Music School offers excellent facilities for making music, with a large rehearsal and concert hall. 

The Arts: In their first two terms at Winchester, pupils explore the range of arts available at the school. In Art, this includes the essential disciplines of painting, drawing and printmaking. Pupils can focus on a specific media or theatrical specialism, training to a high standard in: Abstract Painting, Acting, Architectural Modelling, Carpentry, Ceramics, Creative Theatre, Technology, Directing, Drawing, Etching, Fashion Design, Film Installations, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture and Silversmithing.In addition, they can choose from the wide range of arts clubs, activities and societies.

Joining at 13+:

We spend time getting to know each prospective family during the admissions process. It is a unique system, focused on potential, not merely prior attainment. It is based substantially on interview and ensures that by the time your son starts, they will often have had a number of years to get to know us.

Sixth Form:

We welcome pupils to our Sixth Form to study alongside other ambitious girls and boys and to make the most of everything Winchester has to offer. Pupils benefit from expert teaching and small class sizes across our A Level curriculum, and enjoy sports, music, arts and a wide range of extra-curricular activities, in a beautiful environment.

Boys join as full boarders or day pupils; girls as day pupils, with boarding available from 2025.

Fees

For 2023/24, the fees are as follows:

  • The fee for Boarding pupils is £49,152 per annum (£16,384 per term).
  • The fee for Day pupils (Sixth Form Only) is £36,369 per annum (£12,123 per term).

Scholarships

  • Music and Sports Scholarships and the Warden's Sixth Form Awards are available to any candidate who shows exceptional talent or ability in their chosen field. Winchester offers Music Scholarships and Music Exhibitions at both 13+ and 16+ entries, and Choral and Organ Scholarships for 16+ entries. All awards are given for performances heard at audition. The audition includes a 15-minute performance, and 10 minutes of practical tests. Informal pre-auditions are also available for all candidates.
  • Sports Scholarships offer successful candidates at 13+ and 16+ specialist coaching sessions, a regularly assessed strength and conditioning programme, and a dedicated tutor from the Sports Department to help them achieve their sporting goals while maintaining a sensible and sustainable routine in the school. Successful candidates will be invited to an assessment day, designed to understand their all-round sporting ability. The day is typically split into three parts and looks at physical, technical and mental agility.

Achievements

2023 A-LEVEL RESULTS:

The College is delighted with another year of strong results in A-level examinations.  40.7% of grades were at A* and 77.9% were A*/A. 23% of the pupils in the year group secured at least three A* grades, of whom 15 pupils achieved four A* or more. 57% of the year group achieved straight As or better at A-level. Performance was strong across all subjects: notable successes came in Further Maths (68% A*, 97% A*/A), Physics (58% A*, 89% A*/A) and Chemistry (45% A*, 83% A*/A). The percentage of pupils achieving A*/A at EPQ was 75% in 2022-2023 (in comparison to 57% in 2021-2022). 

2023 GCSE/IGCSE RESULTS:

The College is very pleased with another year of great success at IGCSE/GCSE. 49.8% of all grades were Grade 9, with 71.9% being at Grade 9 or Grade 8. 88.1% of all grades were Grade 9/8/7. Eight pupils had a clean sweep of Grade 9s, with a further twenty-four having a profile comprised of entirely Grades 9 or 8 (equivalent to A*). Performance was strong across all subjects: notable successes came in Greek (100% Grade 9), Geography (73% Grade 9), Russian (71% Grade 9) and Physics (70% Grade 9).

LEAVERS’ DESTINATIONS:

The Sixth Form is a bridge to higher education. Our dedicated ‘Futures’ team supports students’ applications to UK, US, and other international universities, and subject specialists offer subject-specific guidance. A significant number of our pupils go to Oxbridge or a Russell Group university every year. Other destinations include leading US universities, such as Brown, Chicago, Columbia, Dartmouth, Duke, Georgetown, Harvard, MIT, Princeton, UNC, UPenn and Yale.
