Wharfedale Montessori School is Independent Primary school in North Yorkshire for kids aged 2 to 11 (Gender - Mixed )
Wharfedale Montessori School, located on the beautiful Bolton Abbey Estate in North Yorkshire, provides preschool and primary education. The location, Strid Wood, is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).Founded in 1990 by Jane Lord, the school is inspired by a passionate belief in the benefits of a Montessori education, to give students hands-on and practical instruction in a high-quality environment. Initially the school was established as a Children’s House focused on ages 3-6 years, but due to overwhelming parent demand the school expanded, becoming one of the first Montessori schools in the UK to offer primary education (6-11 years). Jane’s husband, Graham Lord, became a Montessori primary teacher in 1998 extending the family business. Their daughter, Imogen Hardy, trained in 1994 and has worked in Montessori education across the world, including in New Zealand, Europe, the Caribbean and across the UK, before returning to Wharfedale Montessori in 2018 where she is now Vice Principal.
Children’s House (3-6 years)
Three hour work cycle – The school day begins with the Montessori three hour work cycle. The children are self-directed in their choice of activity; a free flow prepared environment offers them opportunity to move between rooms choosing from an extensive range of materials and activities. The high staff/child ratios allow your children to be carefully observed and directed in their learning. Groups of children are taken outside during this time to continue their learning in the beautiful outdoor environment.
Montessori Curriculum Areas – Primary
In Montessori education, the second plane of development is the period from, approximately, six to twelve years. The developmental focus of this period is intellectual independence, alongside the development of social responsibility and ethics. During this stage children use reasoning, abstract thought and imagination to explore and develop their understanding of the world. Children are given the freedom to learn through their own activity and exploration, and, in doing so, become increasingly independent. The curriculum aims to develop the qualities of self-confidence, self-direction, self-discipline and persistence, alongside the ability to concentrate, to move with coordination, to interact with others with grace and courtesy and to take responsibility for the order of the environment and for their own learning.
Forest School
Forest School has a developmental ethos shared by thousands of trained practitioners around the world, who are constantly developing their learning styles and skills to support new and imaginative learners. Its roots reach back to the open-air culture, friluftsliv, or free air life, seen as a way of life in Scandinavia where Forest School began. It arrived in the UK in 1993 and has grown from strength to strength since then.
Selection Criteria: Selective
The aim of Wharfedale Montessori School is to provide an educational setting for all children without discrimination, where they can progress together in harmony. The Children’s House (preschool) takes children age 3-6 years. Children then transfer to the Primary setting in managed stages when they are ready, with this usually occurring around the time of a child’s sixth birthday, and remain with us until the end of the year in which they turn 11 years old.
