Description

Wimbledon Common Preparatory School is Independent Primary school in Merton for kids aged 5 to 7 (Gender - Boys )

Wimbledon Common Preparatory School was founded in 1919 as a place of education for the children of local gentry in the neighbourhood of Wimbledon Village and was a preparatory school for King's College School and other notable public schools. All children begin school with a variety of experiences and previous learning. It is the privilege of the practitioners working in the Early Years to take on the task of building upon that prior learning and experience. This is done through a holistic approach to learning, ensuring that parents/carers, support staff and the Reception teachers work effectively together to support childrens’ learning and development.

EARLY YEARS
Early childhood is the foundation on which children build the rest of their lives. At WCPS we greatly value the role that the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) plays in laying secure foundations for future learning and development. The children join us with a wide range of experiences and previous learning. It is the privilege of staff working in EYFS to further develop those learning experiences. We do this through a holistic approach, which ensures that parents/carers and staff work effectively together to support each boys’ learning and development.

YEAR 1
In Year 1 we endeavour to create a happy, purposeful and stimulating learning environment where children will be supported and encouraged to become active and effective learners. They seek to build upon the many skills they have developed in the EYFS and are committed to ensuring that each child is able to realise his full potential in all aspects of learning including personal, social and emotional development. Our aim is to develop confident and independent individuals who will aspire to our high expectations and take pride in contributing to the smooth running of Year 1 by adopting various roles and responsibilities within the class and representing the class on the School Council.

YEAR 2
In Year 2 the children continue to consolidate and build on the learning experiences from Reception and Year 1. They are challenged to become increasingly independent learners as the curriculum broadens and develops their problem solving and thinking skills. As the most senior pupils in the school many of the Y2 children enjoy positions of responsibility and the opportunities to set a shining example to others. They may be awarded roles such as House Captain, Deputy House captain, a variety of sports captaincies and the honour of acting as an ambassador for the School on Open Mornings.

Features

Things to note

MUSIC
Music is an important and popular part of the childrens’ experience of WCPS. The teaching of music develops their ability to listen and increases their self-discipline and creativity. The aim in music lessons is, first and foremost, to develop a life-long love of music. Music helps to develop skills that support learning in other areas of the curriculum and that are needed for both life and work, for example listening skills, the ability to concentrate, creativity, intuition, aesthetic sensitivity, perseverance, self-confidence and sensitivity towards others.

SPORTS & CLUBS
Sport is an integral part of life at Wimbledon Common Prep School as part of the school curriculum and within our extensive extra curricular programme. The aim is to provide dynamic and innovative learning for all children, irrespective of their innate sporting ability. Participation in sport fosters good health, which benefits the boys in their academic work and inculcates personal qualities such as team-spirit, the willingness to meet a challenge and a sense of fair play. All of this contributes to the rounded education which is at the heart of the Wimbledon Common Prep School approach.

The entry process is academically selective and assessments are held in a friendly, nursery-style environment, with activities designed to enable the child to relax and be themselves. At 4+ we are looking for potential, rather than what has already been learnt. The assessment covers language and social skills, number, physical and creative skills and will take place in the January preceding the year of entry.
