Beeston Castle, Crowning a sandstone crag above the Cheshire Plain, Beeston Castle is among the most dramatically sited fortresses in England. Long before the castle was built, the crag was a hive of human activity. Recreated Bronze Age roundhouse brings its prehistoric past to life. With a ground area of more than 50 square metres, it’s bigger than some modern homes.
The castle was built here in the 1220s. It’s crowning glory, the inner bailey, is defended by a rock-cut ditch and a mighty double-towered gatehouse. From here you’ll get astounding views across eight counties. Inside is the famous castle well, traditionally believed to be the hiding place of Richard II’s treasure. In the visitor centre, the ‘Castle of the Rock’ display retells Beeston’s 4,000-year story. Set in 40 acres of woodland, Beeston Castle is a paradise for walkers, nature lovers and adventurous children.
