Features

  • The Cholmondeley Arms: Set in beautiful Cheshire Countryside adjacent to Cholmondeley Castle and Gardens it sits inside a former Victorian Village Schoolhouse on the Cholmondeley Estate.  The Cholmondeley Arms has won many accolades over the years, building a great reputation for freshly cooked, locally sourced food.  Its menu is quintessentially English and includes such truly flavorsome favorites as ‘Old Traditional Pub Plate to share’ or for your main meal the ‘Hand crafted Steak and Kidney pie’.
  • The Childrens Den: Opened in 2014 with the help of dozens of children lending their creative input, this is sited in a corner of the Den made from a stack of old pallets to give a basic structure.  Children then added old plant pots, bits of old clay pipe, old roof tiles and filled them with stones, straw, bamboo canes, soil and leaves to create an ideal habitat for a host of insects.  Our bug hotel provides a valuable shelter for important species such as ladybirds, woodlice and lacewings to name a few, all valuable and essential insects for a healthy garden.
  • Play Area: Children will love nothing more than enjoying the open spaces, exploring the hidden pathways and having fun! The childrens play area is situated by the Mere close to the picnic area with its fabulous views of the Mere and Cholmondeley Castle.
  • The Lakeside Walk & Nature Trail: The Deer Park Mere and Nature Trail gives visitors the opportunity to enjoy the tranquillity and beauty of the surroundings, with magnificent views of Cholmondeley Castle. The Mere has an extensive bird and waterfowl population. The Wildlife is monitored and recorded with the help of Nantwich Natural History Society, who are also involved in the continuing programme to improve this lakeside area.
  • The Chapel: The Chapel is open for visitors on Gardens open days. Please note the Chapel closes at 4.30pm. St. Nicholas’s Chapel is situated in the Park accessed either by car or on foot approximately a 20 minute walk from the Tea Room. It is the first building mentioned on the Estate in 1285, when Hugh De Cholmondeley was granted permission by the local Rectors for “a fit chaplain celebrating Divine Service in his Chapel of Cholmondeley”.
  • The Lavinia Walk: Leading along the gardens central axis between the Rose Garden and the Temple Garden is the Lavinia Walk which is a new feature of the gardens, and a fitting tribute to Lady Lavinia and her legacy.
  • Cholmondeley Wildside: In Cholmondeley Castle Gardens you also get to experience the wealth of wildlife the Gardens and the variety of plants attract. Especially on Lavinia Walk, our 100m double herbaceous border which acts as a rich nectar bar for all the hungry pollinators.
  • Tower Hill:  At the rear of the Cafe are several pathways that lead you up onto Tower Hill. The area was cleared of dangerous old trees, and untidy undergrowth in the 1980’s, and with the help of the countryside commission extensive planting of indigenous trees was undertaken. This has made for a splendid background for a fine collection of more ornamental trees and shrubs including; Nothofagus, Camellia, Magnolia, Cornus and of course Rhododendrons.
