The London Museum where you can see inside a narrowboat cabin, learn about the history of London's canals, about the cargoes carried, the people who lived and worked on the waterways, and the horses that pulled their boats. 

Peer down into the unique heritage of a huge Victorian ice well used to store ice imported from Norway and brought by ship and canal boat to be stored. This unique waterways museum is housed in a former ice warehouse built in about 1862-3 for Carlo Gatti, the famous ice cream maker, and features the history of the ice trade and ice cream as well as the canals.

Features

Boat Trips: On selected dates you can add a canal boat trip to your museum visit. The trips are normally aboard Long Tom, a purpose-designed sightseeing boat jointly owned by us and another waterways charity. It has big windows that open in summer, and passengers are seated at tables. Free tea or coffee is provided on board, and on all trips of more than half an hour a guide provides a commentary about the route on which you are cruising. The canal is a living piece of industrial history so seeing it from the boat is the perfect addition to your visit.

The different trips on offer

  • Tunnel boat trip: Season starts in March. From the museum through Islington Tunnel, three-quarters of a mile long, and back. This takes about 50 minutes but be aware there are sometimes delays as other boats use the canal as well. Guided trip with tea/coffee on board.
  • Long boat trips to Little Venice in west london. On this trip departing 1115 on alternate Fridays you pass through St. Pancras, Camden locks, and Regent's Park, and the shorter Maida Hill Tunnel: The journey takes about two hours each way. On request we stop on route to enable you to buy a sandwich for lunch from a convenience store. The boat stops for just a few minutes at Little Venice, where toilet facilities are available. Guided trip with tea/coffee on board.
  • Long boat trips to Victoria Park: Summer season only. Departs 1115 on alternate Fridays. The trip takes about two hours in each direction. returning to Islington. The route is more industrial and starts by passing through Islington Tunnel. On request we stop close to a convenience store on the journey to enable you to buy a sandwich for lunch. We do not stop for lunch at Victoria Park but a brief stop is made and toilet facilities are available. There are several locks on the route. Guided trip with tea/coffee on board.
  • Cream Tea cruises: Summer season only. On these trips, every Thursday afternoon, and some Wednesdays, you will be served a traditional afternoon cream tea of scone, clotted cream, and jam, with tea or coffee. Tea in the tunnel is a unique experience. The trip goes through City Road Lock before turning to return to the museum, and takes about an hour and a half.
  • Camden Locks Explorer: Selected Wednesdays in the summer season. Departing at 1115, we offer an extended trip through four locks to the west of Camden, and return. The famous Camden Locks seen from the water, with a guide on board and tea/coffee served during the cruise, which lasts about three hours. There will be an opportunity to buy food from Camden markets.Guided trip with tea/coffee on board.
  • Historic Boat Trips: On alternate Wednesdays we have historic boat cruises Follow the link for details. Guided trip with tea/coffee on board.

  • By Car: The museum does not have a car park. The nearest car park is the car park of St. Pancras International Station. Most of the time, therefore, public transport is recommended. A limited number of parking meters is available in the surrounding streets, but the charges are high during restricted hours. Parking is free and normally available after 1830 on weekdays, after 1330 on Saturdays, and all day on Sundays. 
  • By Bus: King's Cross is served by numerous bus routes. The full list of route numbers is: 17, 30, 46, 63, 73, 91, 205, 214, 259, 390, 476. In a southbound direction route 390, and in a northbound direction routes 17, 91, and 259 serve a stop in Wharfdale Road, less than two minutes walk from the Museum.
  • By Train: King's Cross mainline station is served by trains from the North-East of England, West Yorkshire and Scotland and by services from North East London, Cambridge, and Hertfordshire.
  • From the Regent's Canal (on foot): You can walk to the London Canal Museum comfortably from Euston, Russel Square, the British Museum, or along the towpath of the Regent's Canal (recommended only in daylight hours) from Camden where the Canalside is home to a famous open air market at weekends. It takes about 30 minutes to walk alongside the Canal from Camden Locks.
