Scolton Manor

Description

Scolton Manor Park: more than 60 acres of Pembrokeshire heritage and fun, run sustainably for the good of the local community and environment. Scolton has been managed and operated by Pembrokeshire County Council since 1972, when it was sold to the Welsh Church Fund by Colonel Jack Higgon. The property of the Higgon family for nearly four centuries, Scolton was sold only on the strict condition that it be run for the benefit and enjoyment of the public in perpetuity.

50 years later we are celebrating our half-centenary as a hub of Pembrokeshire culture and conservation, and as a site that provides fun for the whole family while contributing meaningfully to the local environment and community. Tremendous work on the part of the Scolton team and our many valued volunteers and collaborators has gone into turning the manor and park into a destination that truly offers something for everyone.

Entry is free for everyone. If you are looking for Best place for day out with kids and families then this is the perfect destination offering fun, adventure, and unforgettable memories for everyone.

Features

  • Walled Garden: Immerse yourself in Scolton Manor Park’s self-sufficient heritage. From the early 1850s onwards, Scolton’s gardeners would have grown produce here to supply all or nearly all the Higgon family’s fruit and vegetable needs, including potatoes, carrots, apples, pears and plums, as well as more exotic fare such as peaches and grapes. Even pineapples could be grown here in the specially-constructed Pineapple House (built partially below ground to provide insulation for these tropical delicacies in the cold Welsh winters), as well as flowers such as dahlias, chrysanthemums and lilies to decorate the house. All this would have supplemented the milk, cheese, cream, eggs and meat from the home farm.
  • The Manor House: From drawing room to servants’ hall, and from master bedroom to cellar, Scolton Manor presents a vivid panorama of nineteenth-century life in Wales. The Scolton Manor that stands today is a Victorian construction completed in 1842, designed and built for James Higgon by renowned local architect-engineers William and James Owen. But the estate itself had been owned by Higgons since late in the Elizabethan era, and Scolton’s history is inseparably entwined with that of this prominent local family. Today the manor hosts Pembrokeshire’s County Museum and attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year, offering a rare glimpse of how country life was lived down the centuries – not by the extremely wealthy, nor the desperately poor, but by a prosperous working upper-middle-class family and those who served them.
  • Toy Museum: There is currently a small selection of antique Victorian toys on display in Scolton Manor House, with the full Toy Museum in development – sign up to our newsletter to be kept up-to-date!
  • Playground, Pirate Ship & Musical Play Area: Opportunities for family fun abound at Scolton, including the playground and Pirate Ship, Scolton Express Play Train, and our fully equipped Musical Play area! The latter offers children and adults alike the chance to experience the joy of music-making in the fresh open air, and ensures that your family’s day at Scolton will be a particular delight for the musical among you – and possibly the beginning of a love affair with music for others.
  • Sculpture Trail: Explore an enchanted world of Welsh myth, legend & history in the Scolton Manor Park woods! Wales is a land where history and legend mingle, and waiting for your family at Scolton is a colourful throng of dragons, mythical kings, highwaymen and ghostly shipwrecks, ready to emerge from the trees as you roam.
  • Beekeeping Centre: Scolton is actively committed to helping create a sustainable future for Pembrokeshire – and what better way to do so than by providing a home for The Pembrokeshire Beekeepers' Association?
  • Margaret the Steam Locomotive: Home to Margaret the steam locomotive and the historic Sarnau Signal Box, the Railway Garden is a highlight of any trip to Scolton. Get up close to two irreplaceable pieces of Pembrokeshire locomotive history, enjoy a drink or picnic, and don’t forget the Scolton Express Play Train, specially designed to bring the subject alive for younger members of the family!
  • Eco-Explorer Woodland Village: Installed in 2021 in a previously inaccessible clearing in our woodlands, the Eco-Explorer Woodland Village is a vibrant and exciting play-and-learn facility. Designed to stimulate our younger visitors’ imaginative engagement with the environment, it introduces them to green themes while keeping the mood playful and lighthearted.
  • Bird Hide & Ponds: Warblers, flycatchers, tree pipits, tawny owls, redwings, peregrine falcons, nuthatches, greenfinches: more than a hundred species of bird have been recorded at Scolton, including nearly all the woodland and garden species found in this part of Wales.
  • Bike Trail & Pump Track: Did you know that in 2020 Scolton received funding from Sports Wales for a full woodland bike trail and pump track, built by experts West Wales Trails? With the circular 1km trail itself suitable for all ages and abilities, the route is also packed with fun features and opportunities for those who want to develop their skills.
