Walking in Milford Haven

  • The Lower Priory Woodland Walk: This ancient woodland trail leads all the way to Lower Priory, a small hamlet on the outskirts of Milford Haven, which is the site of a former monastic priory, founded in 1170 by Adam de Roche, and later dissolved by Henry VIII. You can start the 1.4 mile walk just behind Havens Head Retail Park (where there is free parking), and within just a few metres you will be surrounded by nature. With the sound of trees rustling in the wind, and the water in the pills meandering alongside the path, you can switch off and relax as you stroll.
  • Scotch Bay Stroll: Starting off on Mackerel Quay, follow the path just opposite Foam and Sugar Loaf to discover Milford Haven’s coastline, on a leafy trail with breath taking views of the Milford Haven Waterway. With flat, easy access, this path is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs, and mobility scooters – if you’re cycling, there is one narrow gate where you will have to dismount to pass through. If you’re taking the dog for a walk or your children out for some fresh air and ship spotting, this route is ideal.
  • Water Ways Heritage Walking Trail: In the late 1700s, Sir William Hamilton saw great potential in Milford Haven, and enlisted the help of his nephew, Charles Greville, to establish a whaling station here. 7 families from Nantucket sailed across the cold Atlantic sea to set up this new industry. Although whaling, our first ‘oil age’ was short lived, the legacy of those first families lives on in street and place names throughout the town. A century later, the fishing industry arrived at Milford Haven and in 1888 ‘Sybil’ was the first vessel to enter Milford Docks and heralded the start of a booming industry, for which Milford Haven became known as “the place fish comes from”.
  • Historic Haven Heritage Walking Trail: Formed by a drowned valley, or ‘ria’ after the ice age, our deep water, tidal estuary has brought Vikings, crusaders, would-be kings, sea merchants and admirals to shelter in our safe and beautiful historic haven. Viking Chieftain Hubba, overwintered here with 23 ships in 854 and left his legacy on the area of Milford Haven known as Hubberston. In fact, Viking heritage inspired the name Milford Haven, or ‘Melrfjordr’ – from the Norse words ‘melr’ (sandbank) and ‘fjord’ (inlet).
  • Energy Kingdom Heritage Walking Trail: Milford Haven is the UK’s largest energy port, capable of delivering 30% of the UK gas demand. Starting in 1960 when Esso completed work on the first oil refinery on the Milford Haven Waterway, the advantages of its location and deep water soon saw other oil refineries emerge on our shores. To follow the Energy Kingdom trail, keep an eye out for the yellow lamppost banners which go across Mackerel Quay. There are small signs on the same lampposts with QR codes, which will take you to the full stories created by the talented pupils from Milford Haven School as part of Milford Youth Matters’ project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
