City of London School for Girls

St Giles Terrace, London, UK

City of London School for Girls is an independent day school for pupils aged 7-18 situated in the heart of the Barbican. Opened in 1894, the school provides an outstanding education for able students from all backgrounds, cultures and faiths. We capitalise on our location to attract students from all over Greater London and beyond, and give them access to every learning opportunity our capital has to offer.

Academic yet unstuffy, modern yet acutely aware of its history, diverse yet with a strong sense of identity, our school defies easy categorisation. This is best demonstrated by our unique geography, nestled between the brutalist Barbican and looming Roman walls. Ours is an intellectually edgy, unassuming and unpretentious environment, unshackled by tradition, and imbued with a relaxed excellence. This is a refreshing and modern place in which to learn.

Sixth Form students, who run a number of the societies, also have the opportunity to start a new activity.

Selection Details :

Joining at Prep

We welcome 24 girls into year 3 to join the prep school each year. Children must have reached the age of seven before 1st September in the year of entry and will be in year 2 when they sit their entrance tests.  Our assessment for 7+ consists of two parts,  an assessment test in November, followed by a practical assessment in January.  Both of these are in the school  year prior to entry in September and must be undertaken in the Prep department.  We do not offer the opportunity for pupils to sit the assessments abroad.

Joining at Senior School

We welcome around 80 pupils into year 7 each year to join our current year 6 pupils in the Senior School. Pupils will be in year 6 when they are assessed. There is a two-stage entrance process for entering the school, comprising an assessment and interview.

For September 2021 entry pupils should have a date of birth that falls between 1 September 2009 and 31 August 2010. Registrations are now open for 2021, please click here to register.

We have decided to update our admissions process for 2021 so that it is compliant with current Covid-19 government regulations. You will understand, however, that the situation is inevitably fluid and it may be necessary to adjust some plans in the light of future developments.

Our commitment to attracting the brightest, most curious and enthusiastic pupils from across the Greater London area has remained our guiding principle when designing our new procedures. We are confident that the changes we have made will allow all pupils to demonstrate their ability and potential.

We are equally committed to ensuring that no pupil is disadvantaged by the period of lockdown. We will therefore be asking both parents and schools to provide more information about the level of education received during this period. This information will be taken into consideration when deciding who to invite for interview.

The process can seem daunting at first, but we aim to make it as smooth and enjoyable as possible. We will keep you regularly updated with where we are in the process, what happens next and how your child is getting on. We hope you will find all necessary information here, but please email if you have any questions at all.

We are able to waive the registration fee for families in receipt of social benefits. Please email with any relevant documentation and our Registrar will be able to advise you further.

Joining at Sixth Form

We welcome students from all backgrounds and schools to join our current year 11 pupils in moving up to the sixth form. We admit around 10-20 students each year, many of whom are awarded bursary or scholarship places. We welcome the valuable contribution new students bring - new ideas, new interests, new personalities and new ambitions.

Fees :

Senior School:  £6,468 per term, exclusive of school lunches

Preparatory School:  £6,468 per term, inclusive of school lunches

  • Individual music lessons: £288 per term
  • Evening supervision (preparatory school only): £204 per term

Scholarships :

We offer 11+ and 16+ scholarships in the following areas:

  • Art scholarships
  • Sports scholarships
  • Music scholarships
  • Drama scholarships

Please note that we do not offer any scholarships at 7+ nor academic scholarships at 11+ or 16+.

We have around eight scholarships for 11+ applicants and four for 16+ applicants. These scholarships are for students who demonstrate outstanding merit and promise. They are only awarded to pupils who also do well in their assessment and interview.

In addition, we are also fortunate to have very good links with the neighbouring Junior Guildhall School of Music and Drama (JGSMD), located just two minutes away, next to the Barbican Centre. Through this relationship we are able to offer a joint scholarship to a year 7 pupil every year, which enables a selected pupil to have specialist instrumental tuition at JGSMD.

Scholarships are worth up to £1,500 per year. They are valid for five years. After five years, students will be invited to reapply for a scholarship in the sixth form.

We believe that City's vast range of educational opportunities must be open to pupils who will benefit most from learning here, not just those who can afford the fees. We are committed to providing school places to pupils regardless of financial means and we therefore offer bursaries and scholarships for entry into year 7 and year 12. Approximately 25% of our current senior school pupils receive some form of financial assistance.

Bursary awards range from smaller awards of 25% right up to 100% (full fee) awards. These awards are means tested. As we do not offer academic scholarships at City, we encourage you to apply for a bursary award if you think that you would qualify, even if for a smaller award rather than a full fee award.

Bursaries are awarded if a pupil is successful in the entrance exam and interview, her family’s bursary application is successful, and if there are sufficient funds available in the bursary fund. Our bursaries are awarded thanks to the generosity of benefactors, the City of London Corporation and the City Livery Companies, with whom the school maintains a strong and special link.

The worth of a bursary is awarded on a sliding scale, depending on your means. We are also able to award additional assistance to recipients of full fee bursaries. This covers such costs as curriculum-based school trips, travel to and from school by public transport and uniform costs.

Please email or if you have any questions at all about bursary applications.

The bursary application process is online and a link will be sent to all those who have indicated that they may wish to apply for a bursary once registration closes.

Leavers Destination :

The end of year is an emotional experience, especially for girls in Year 13, for whom it marks the end of their days at City. The warmth and affection they have for the school, their teachers and their friends, shows clearly in their final celebrations.

All girls continue their studies at university, art college or music conservatoire level, amongst which Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, Warwick, Nottingham, Manchester and Edinburgh prove popular destinations. Many defer university and take a gap year to travel, study or work abroad.
