Facilities
Kindergarten
The aim of the kindergarten is to guide children as they take their first steps towards learning and independence indoors and out. They are really proud of the new kindergarten building which opened this September 2021. It is a wonderful purpose designed space with oak flooring, wooden furniture and a calm and beautiful atmosphere. There are areas for block play, art and craft/cooking, role play, small world and quiet activity. It has its own kitchen area and a shared indoor space for yoga, music and movement as well as snack and lunches. Meals and snacks are taken at café style tables with flowers on the table. Children prepare their own fruit, make snacks like bread or muesli, and drink from real glasses.
Infants
They have two infant classes, Sycamore Class for Reception and year One children (4-6 year olds) and Oak Tree Class for children in year Two (6-7 year olds). In Sycamore Class children learn in a relaxed way without the pressures to be found in many mainstream settings. The class is normally around 16 children and has a teacher and a teaching assistant. The class follows a largely child-led curriculum which supports children in following their own interests but also gives them opportunities for group work allowing them to build their writing, numeracy and problem-solving skills. Children enjoy a rich cross curricula approach to learning and whilst we use the national curriculum as a framework for our objectives we are not constrained by it and teach creatively developing children’s love of learning.
Juniors
There are three classes in Juniors. Chestnut Class is for children in Years 3, Willow class for Year 4 and Elder Class for children in years 5 and 6. Each class has between 10-16 children.In Juniors children enjoy an enriching topic-based approach to learning which encompasses the core subjects of English, Maths and Science as well as the foundation subjects. The curriculum incorporates the objectives of the National Curriculum but has been developed to be inspiring and creative. The curriculum builds on the foundations laid down in Infants.

Things to note
Forest School
All children at Annan take part in weekly Forest School activities with their own teachers and with Helen, the very experienced and trained Forest School teacher. They have access to an ancient woodland adjacent to the school and the commitment to regular visits to the same woodland site over a period of time is crucial to children’s understanding of the seasons and how woodland changes.
Extra-curricular
In addition to the rich curriculum children experience through their topic work they are inspired by a wide range of extra curricular activities and trips. Real life memorable experiences are central to inspiring the children’s learning. During the Inspire Stage of the curriculum children are taken to visit museums, country parks, art galleries, and places of interest which create high levels of enthusiasm and excitement for all areas of the curriculum. Every new term starts with an outing which can be just one class or several classes together.
Sports
As a small school they like to ensure that children have the opportunity to experience a wide range of sports including small sided games of hockey, cricket, football, netball and rounders. Sport takes place on the tarmac playground area all year round and on the local sports field in the summer term until September. They have an indoor hall for gymnastics, yoga and dance.Children have the opportunity for extra curricula sport and play competitively against local schools particularly in netball. Every summer we hold a whole school Sports Day to which parents are invited. Every child takes part as part and gets a certificate and a cheer at the end.
Clubs
They run extra-curricular clubs and activities to enrich the learning experience at Annan. Children have the opportunity to take part in a diverse and exciting range of extra-curricular clubs and activities after school and at lunchtime. These have included sports, drama, cookery, animation, modelling, woodwork, comic book creating, choir, art and many more.They have an active Eco Club which has already earned the school a Silver Eco-Schools award for raising awareness of recycling and green issues as well as running a hugely popular eco fair.
Music
Music is very important to children at Annan School. They are very pleased to be working with Mark Broad, a composer, trainer and music teacher who comes into school every week to take classes throughout the school developing the children’s and the teachers’ musical abilities. Classes have music lessons in school using a range of percussion and tuned instruments.
