Skippers Hill Manor Preparatory School is Independent Secondary school in Non-selective for kids aged 2 to 13 (Gender - 2 to 13 )
At Skippers, they are committed to providing each and every child with a dynamic and supportive learning environment with boundless possibilities. They celebrate each child’s unique character and capabilities, allowing them to be themselves and motivated to do their very best. It is important for us to foster a community of discovery which encourages every individual to find and develop their passions, seek new opportunities, develop lasting friendships and ultimately achieve their potential.Skippers has a distinctive character that people fall in love with. They are a family school with an incredibly happy atmosphere; staff are always approachable and children are enthused to come to school. In a world where children seem to grow up faster than ever, they provide an environment for children to remain just that. We want them to enjoy school, thrive on the many opportunities offered, be inspired to work hard and to be kind, adventurous, courteous and honest.
Nursery
The Nursery at Skippers is housed in a purpose-built building for the children aged between two and four years old. The small class sizes and high staff to child ratios ensure that the unique and natural talents of every child are recognised and encouraged from the moment they start at Skippers. Regular parent consultations, individual learning journals and the open door policy ensure that parents are provided with continual updates on their child’s progress. The Nursery team consists of highly qualified specialist teachers who are assisted by enthusiastic, dedicated and fully qualified teaching assistants.National and regional statistics confirm that a high percentage of Skippers’ children are judged as exceeding the expected level of development by the time they leave the Nursery and transition into the Pre-Prep.There are many contributory factors to the excellent outcomes for the very youngest children: our close and supportive relationships with parents; highly trained and committed staff; and the wonderful environment in which they are lucky enough to work and play.
Pre Prep
Skippers Pre-Prep (Reception to Year 2 classes) is an exciting and vibrant part of the school, where children are encouraged to learn and grow together in a warm and nurturing environment. The aim is to give every child the best start to their school life, with plentiful opportunities to explore and learn together with the support and enthusiasm of our highly qualified teachers and teaching assistants. The small classes ensure that there are lots of opportunities everyday for each individual child to be curious, explore, take risks and be challenged to reach their own potential. The Pre-Prep is located at the heart of the school, so that they benefit from the facilities and specialist subject teaching seen throughout the school. This provides a continuity of education from our wider curriculum teaching from the start of your child’s education here at Skippers. As soon as your child joins us they are allocated to a House, which encourages children to get to know other children across the school and feel part of our Skippers community.
Prep
As the children move up into the Prep School, there are some noticeable changes to the experience for the children. There are a wide range of after school activities to choose from and with the school day finishing at 4:30pm, the children will experience more contact time with experienced, specialist teachers, many of whom will continue to teach them until the end of Year 8. This extension of the school day allows for more time to be spent on sporting activities, Drama and Music as well as an enhanced and challenging curriculum. From Year 3 upwards, children will participate in a range of sports within the PE and Games curriculum including Netball, Football, Rugby, Hockey, Gymnastics, Swimming, Cricket and Athletics. All children will represent Skippers in fixtures and competitions as part of the extensive sports fixtures which take place on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Performing Arts
Skippers has a thriving Performing Arts Department which offers a wide range of opportunities for children throughout the whole school. Skippers children are encouraged to engage with the Performing Arts as an outlet for their creativity. A number of our pupils have gone on to achieve scholarships in Music, Drama and Dance to their next schools.
Music
Music plays an extremely important part in the life of a Skippers’ child. All classes from Nursery to Year 8 have Music lessons as part of their curriculum. The Skippers Music curriculum uses singing as it’s focal point and all children learn to express their musicality through songs and musical games. This grounding is used to teach music theory (an understanding of rhythm, pitch and reading music), alongside building knowledge of musical history, composition and listening skills.
Drama
Pupils from Years 3-8 study Drama as part of the curriculum. All children from Nursery to Year 8 also have the opportunity to perform in productions – see our Photo Gallery for some of the most recent performances. Additional drama workshops run by visiting groups are arranged during the year.
Sport
As with everything we do at Skippers, the Sport is child-centred, allowing our children to explore and excel at their passions. There is a wide range of sports available for children of all ages and abilities to enjoy. The aim is to achieve a 100% participation rate to allow every child to experience the benefits of match days and controlled competition on a weekly basis. As you can read in our 2019 ISI Inspection report, our Sport provision is outstanding. Over the years a significant number of our children have been awarded specialist scholarships in Sport at their chosen senior school. This is facilitated by our team of experienced and enthusiastic sports staff who are in place to deliver and develop our children’s knowledge and skills while instilling a love and passion for a variety of sports from Nursery to Year 8.
Extra-Curricular Clubs
Life at Skippers extends well beyond the classroom where extra-curricular clubs, trips and activities enrich children’s experiences, developing the skills they will need to thrive as adults in the 21st century.A key strength of Skippers is the outstanding quality and enviable variety of our extra-curricular programme which is offered to children in both the Pre-Prep and Prep School.
