Bede's is a colourful and busy place, with lots of energy and a delightful rhythm. They are welcoming, kind and extremely ambitious for all of the pupils.Bede's Prep was founded in 1895, with a roll of four boys. Out of the success of Bede's Prep School, Bede's Senior School was founded in 1979. At Bede's, they encourage each and every individual to discover and develop their own unique passions, seek new horizons and achieve their potential. They present the pupils with the prospect of innovation, exploration and experimentation, to ensure every Bedian has the confidence to excel at the things which they value the most.If you are looking for day and boarding schools in Sussex, consider Bede's as somewhere that provides a joyful education for pupils between the ages of 4 and 18. YEARS 7 AND 8
In Year 7, lessons become more formally structured and delineated by subject, but this does not mean that they are less wide-ranging in approach. At the beginning of Year 7, the pupils will begin preparations for examinations in earnest and develop their independent learning and organisation skills. One of the key skills that we focus on in the senior years is independence, encouraging pupils to manage their own homework schedules and take on more responsibility within the School. For some, this is also an important stage in their preparation for scholarships.
YEARS 3 TO 6
In Years 3, 4, 5 and 6, each subject’s curriculum has been consciously structured to be fun, engaging and challenging, with the level of academic rigour scaling dependent on individual ability.Year 3 is very much a transition year. They ease the children into Prep School life by increasing the number of lessons taken by specialist staff in the main school building, including Computing, Art, Music, Drama, Dance, Swimming, PE and Games. These lessons are taught alongside many subjects still taught by their Form Tutor in Holywell, such as English, Maths, Science, Geography, History, PSHE and Religious Studies. By taking this blended approach, we ensure that the children are fully prepared to confidently make the move to the main school building for their journey into Middle Years.
YEARS 1 AND 2
At Bede's Prep, the aim is to develop a lifelong love and enthusiasm for language and literature in all forms, and to enable the pupils to become confident and creative communicators. This philosophy is embedded as soon as children join our Bede's community. At these early and rapid stages of development, we develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information. All children follow a staged reading scheme, read with their teacher daily and use the well-stocked Holywell Library.
CO-CURRICULAR
At Bede’s, they believe in developing every aspect of a young person. For this reason, our Co-Curricular programme is unlike any other. Activities and clubs at Bede’s Prep School run throughout the school day, with children from Year 3 all the way through to Year 8 being inspired, empowered and motivated to succeed. The programme is varied each term and is shaped, in part, by suggestions made by the pupils. Children make independent choices and decisions about their participation, become involved in the organisation, management and leadership of activities and take part in activities for myriad reasons - recreational, competitive and educational.
SPORT
Few Prep Schools can offer the calibre of coaching found at Bede’s Prep and these opportunities deepen year on year, exposing the pupils to an expansive training and fixtures programme. The dedication to provide the very best coaching for pupils of all abilities gives all of our pupils the chance to grow in confidence, capacity and accomplishment year on year. They offer three Core Sports at Bede’s: Cricket, Football and Hockey.
DANCE
Bede’s Prep Dance offers teaching in a wide range of styles, including Ballet, Contemporary, Modern, Jazz, Tap, Street, Musical Theatre and Choreography for children of Nursery age through to Year 8. Dance is taught either through specialised dance classes held during the school day as part of the Dance Programme or through the clubs and activitiesPre-Prep pupils can also take ballet, tap and modern classes via Dance Clubs. From year 3 upwards the Dance Clubs include musical theatre, freestyle jazz and choreography. These are all in addition to classes offered as part of the curriculum and the Dance Programme.
Selection Criteria: Selective
At both the Prep and Senior Schools the aim of our admissions process is to genuinely get to know each child as well as for families to gain a real insight into Bede’s.Many families may join us for an open day, but they also encourage families to return to experience the School on a normal working day. From there, they invite children to join us to experience the School for themselves, whether that be for a taster day at the Prep School or a Bede’s Experience Day or Sixth Form Information Day at the Senior School; the sports enthusiasts are invited in for personal training sessions with the expert coaches and dancers to join in with Legat classes. Whatever age or interest a child has, our aim is that they get to know them and they them.
