Description

Buckingham Preparatory School is Independent Primary school in Harrow for kids aged 2 to 11 (Gender - Boys )

The school is a highly academic, achieving school. They educate our boys to the standard required for placements in all of the prestigious local independent and state senior and grammar schools. We are not connected or tied to any one senior school and as such we plan our curriculum and attainment levels to ensure placements are achieved at the age of 11. We pride ourselves on consistently achieving at least one first choice school offer for every Year 6 boy as they progress through to senior schools. But, important as academic achievement is, our school is also fully committed to whole child education and aims to ensure each boy leaves us with the social and moral life skills required to make them thoughtful and valued members of the wider community. They have specialist Music, Art, Drama, French and PE teachers who educate our boys not only in the skills within these areas, but also the attitudes and ethos behind them. We believe teamwork, sportsmanship and commitment are every bit as important as winning and that enjoyment of the arts is just as important as production.

Facilities

Pre-School
In the Early Years at Buckingham Preparatory School we aim to ensure that the beginning of a child’s education is a happy and fulfilling experience. The Buckingham Pre School caters for boys from the term they turn 3.It is situated on the same site as the main school. The children in the Pre School have access to the school’s facilities and attend school assemblies and events throughout the year.  Pre School is open from 8am until 6pm term time (5pm Fridays)  and 8am till 5pm in school holiday time. Your child’s early years are such a special time and those of us privileged to work with 3-5 year olds watch the world open up before them as they explore through purposeful play and learning. As an academically driven school we have exemption from the Government scripted learning and development requirements of the EYFS. This has allowed us to use our own bespoke higher level curriculum in both English and Mathematics which is based on the levels of achievement we know our children are capable of. This then spearheads the ensuring of higher levels of achievement throughout the whole school journey up until the age of 11.

Prep
At Buckingham Preparatory School boys move into Prep, the junior part of the school, at the end of Year 2 until they reach Year 6. Our Prep School provides a happy and purposeful atmosphere in which boys are able to feel confident and positive about school life and develop the skills to become independent learners. They recognise that the best results are achieved when education is a partnership between home and school and that you as a parent, and your son’s first teacher, are central to his learning and development. In Years 3 and 4 boys are taught most subjects by their form teacher.  Specialist subjects which include Art, Music, French and Sports are taught by dedicated subject teachers. The boys learn to develop their  independence in learning in order to move to the upper part of Prep which is subject taught by specialist teachers.

Features

Things to note

Clubs & Activities
The most important reason for going to school is to learn. However, they know that there is more to school than just lessons, and they provide an extensive range of clubs and activities for the children to try. For a small day school, Buckingham Preparatory School runs an impressive list of extra curricular activities, most of which are free of charge. Indeed, it is important for the pupils to be given the opportunity of learning new skills out of class and to mix with pupils from other year groups.

After School Club
At Buckingham Preparatory School we are here to care for your children from 8am until 6.00pm. Infants enter into school at 8am and into the classroom at 8.15am. Junior boys line up in the school forecourt at 8am and enter into school at 8.15am and into their classrooms at 8.30am. Although school offers many extra-curricular activities covering all year groups with a wide range of pursuits, we also offer an after school  club. After School Club is open daily to all pupils after school until 6.00 p.m. (5pm on Fridays). It must be booked in advance to ensure a place. Each daily session is £5.60 per hour which is payable in arrears and added to the following term’s fee invoice.

Music
Music is enjoyed by all at Buckingham Preparatory School and taught to all classes by a music specialist teacher on a weekly basis. We sing in assemblies and have an after school choir practice each week. The choir performs throughout the year at all school events. All children are encouraged to take up a musical instrument and they are taught by a highly competent and qualified team of peripatetic teachers.

Sports
At Buckingham Preparatory School we aim to provide expertise for highly talented and enthusiastic games players, as well as for those who are less naturally at home on the games field but whom, nonetheless, will benefit from taking exercise and developing skills. They play a large number of sports at Buckingham Prep School. We have internal Inter-House competitions and we also play against local schools in regular fixtures. There are also opportunities for competitive matches and fixtures in local and regional competitions.

Drama
Drama is looked upon as being an essential component of life of Buckingham Preparatory School. We believe that drama enriches the lives of people, and so we wish to involve as many children as possible in drama activities. The Infants (Reception, Year 1 and Year 2) perform a Christmas play in the School Hall. A Year 6 leavers play is performed at the end of the Easter Term.

Admission Details

Admission to Pre-School
The Pre-School places are in high demand and therefore we are operating on a waiting list system. Early registration at the age of two is highly advisable. If successful, your child will enter Pre-School in the term he turns three. All assessments are carried in a one to one session. Our assessment criteria is not purely that of ability – we are aware that children grow at different rates and have good and bad days.

Admission to Prep School
Where space permits, they are open to accept pupils into other year groups at the start of, and during the academic year. If you are looking for a place in an older year group please contact us to discuss availability. We like to assess children for this type of entry by inviting them to school for a day to meet the other children within the class. During the day your son will be assessed both formally and informally by the class teacher. For Reception entry your son will only need to come in for an assessment.
