Caversham Preparatory School is Independent Primary school in Reading for kids aged 3 to 11 (Gender - Mixed )
With the small class sizes, they provide individualised learning and bespoke teaching to suit the needs of each child. As a small, nurturing and family run school, they place a strong emphasis on the support of our close knit community to foster the growth and the development of each and every child at our school.Combining ‘traditional’ methods with a firm emphasis on technology, we provide teaching which focuses not only on establishing strong foundations of learning, but focuses on the future too. With the recent challenges to education provision nationally, we are therefore able to provide the very highest quality teaching no matter what the future brings.
Early Years Foundation Stage
Settling your child into school happily is the most important thing that we do at Caversham Prep. They encourage parents to stay with their child as long as they need to, but when they see the early years learning garden, that's not usually very long! The children learn to read through a strong phonic scheme. The Reception children will start to bring phonics cards home with them from the beginning of the Reception Year, to support this teaching. The children will read every day and bring their reading books home every evening.Caversham Prep is a ‘print-rich’ environment. Each week’s learning is planned around a book. The books are banded into themes, for example, ‘Growing and Changing’ or ‘Christmas’. The books will be a mixture of fiction and non-fiction and many will already be familiar to the children (which adds to the fun) - ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’, for example. Most of that week’s areas of learning will be planned using the text as a source. Parents are invited to come to a meeting at the start of September to learn more about our approach and how you can help your child to read.
Infants
The Infants (Key Stage 1) begin when children have completed their Reception Year. Children enter Year 1 at the age of 5 and leave Year 2 the end of Key Stage 1, when reaching the age of 7.The aim is to develop the core skills of Reading, Writing and Mathematics to the highest standard. This is done by strong planning, teaching and assessment. English and Mathematics are taught every morning when the children are most alert and receptive. These subjects are taught to all classes at the same time in each classroom so that children who may benefit from joining a different class for some of their learning and may do so easily. This allows us to develop all children's learning to suit their individual needs.
FOREST SCHOOLS
They take the EYFS and KS1 children to the Old Copse in Sonning Common. We have an extensive Forest School’s Curriculum including bug hunting; identifying trees and leaves; mud painting; leaf printing; den building. Caversham Prep is a member of the Woodland Trust and working on their Green Tree Awards.
THE SCHOOL GARDEN
Where we plant and harvest vegetables and fruit from the fruit trees; tend our flower beds; make bird feeders; have our bug ‘hotel’; learn about plant science and enjoy the fresh air and working to a common purpose. We very proudly have the RHS Level 3 Award.

A wide range of Extra-Curricular opportunities are on offer before and after school and some run at lunchtime. The children can try something new, improve an existing hobby, or simply do something for the fun of it!
