Facilities

Early Years School Day
Early Years Education at Hemdean House is delivered by our Reception Class. Boys and girls enter Reception Class at the beginning of the school year in which they will become 5 years old.  Reception children become integrated into the full school community, participating in the wider activities of the school, and benefiting from specialist teaching in I.C.T. and French. Each child has one-to-one time with his or her teacher for literacy and/or numeracy activities every day.  Our pupils know they are cared for and that they will do well.

Prep School Day
The Prep department is housed in the main school.  Girls and boys follow the National Curriculum taught by well-qualified classroom teachers as well as by subject specialists.  Educational trips out of school and visiting speakers or companies in school are used to enrich the teaching and learning experience for the children.  The children’s confidence continues to grow and they begin to contribute to the setting of their own targets.

Pre-Prep
At Key Stage 1 our curriculum is organised on a subject basis wherein language and literacy development and mathematical activities are a priority.  Multiplication tables begin to be taught in Year 1.The Form Teacher has the support of a teaching assistant, full time in Year 1 and part time in Year 2, depending on numbers and specific needs.Specialist teaching in 40 minute lessons of Computing, Music, French and Drama take place once a week and P.E. lessons occur twice a week in Year 1 and three times a week in Year 2.

Things to note

Send
At Hemdean House, they recognise that every child is unique, having both strengths and difficulties at different stages in their life. We aim to nurture a child who can reach his or her potential, despite having barriers to learning. Through identification and support, we will make education provision to cater for individual needs and differences, offering an individualise approach to teaching and learning, allowing your child to access the curriculum.

Sports
At Hemdean House we believe the value of Physical Education goes way beyond the benefits to our pupils’ physical health. They think that sport and phsyical activity of all kinds are crucial to our mental and emotional wellbeing. They teach us to deal with success and failure; to confront our own sef-doubt and come away with the confidence to try, fail then keep on trying until we succeed. Sport forces us to be independent but also to connect, communicate and collaborate with others. It shows us the benefits of teamwork and individual effort in equal measure. Sport develops our ability to think tactically, to plan strategically, to solve problems on the fly and then adapt when our plans go awry. Sport shows us that pleasure is not always immediate and that the greatest sense of self-fulfilment often comes at the cost of breathless hard work.

Forest School
Hemdean House Forest School offers all children the unique opportunity to build independence and self-esteem exploring and investigating their own ideas in our beautiful woodland and outdoor spaces. Each week the fully qualified staff support children from Kindergarten to Year 6 in achieving their own goals and aims in the natural environment whether that be exploring the outdoor spaces, experiencing the freedom of woods or other environmental projects that impact the whole community.
