Creative and Critical Thinking
CCT provides students with the opportunity to develop their creative and analytical thinking skills through a range of activities appropriate to their age and understanding. Critical Thinking is a form of reflective reasoning that analyses and evaluates information and arguments by applying a range of intellectual skills in order to reach clear, logical and coherent judgements within a given context. The study of Critical Thinking will equip students with reasoning skills to use in life, work and further academic study. It also provides students with the opportunity to think deeply, and in a structured way, about issues that are key to them participating in society e.g ethical questions, cultural issues and issues of personal responsibility.
Drama
Drama has an important role to play in the personal development of our students. The skills and qualities developed by students in Drama, such as teamwork, creativity, leadership and controlled risk-taking are assets in all subjects and in all areas of life. Drama stimulates the imagination and allows students to explore issues and experiences in a safe and supportive environment. Drama maintains and stimulates lasting student curiosity, interest and enjoyment. Drama also enables the development of a range of desirable personal qualities such as politeness, perseverance, initiative, confidence and individual awareness and group sensitivity. It also enables students to develop independence of thought and action and gives them a platform to aid in the development of informed opinions, supporting them in giving the opportunity to express reasonable argument free from prejudicial intolerance.
Economics
For students to develop depth of knowledge about how the economy and businesses work. To be able to accurately apply the theory learnt in lessons to what is currently happening in the UK economy and business world. To develop the strength of character to formulate their own ideas about the performance of the economy and whether governments make the right decisions in terms of economic policies that effect everyone. Students will be resilient as they will be required to develop an understanding of difficult economic theory which will be new to them and apply this using case studies.
English
A high-quality English education inspires a love of reading and nurtures intellectual curiosity. Students experience a range of texts from different cultures and time periods which provide them with a better understanding of the world they live in. English at CCHSG introduces students to an exciting range of literature, from Chaucer and Shakespeare to Phillip Pullman, Arthur Miller and Simon Armitage. Students develop their creative writing skills from Year 7 with descriptions, stories and poetry writing, exploring a range of texts from different cultures and backgrounds. Critical analysis is promoted across the English curriculum as students explore both fiction and non-fiction texts.
Geography
Geography at CCHSG should prepare young people with the knowledge, skills and understanding to make sense of their world and to face the challenges that will shape our societies and environments at the local, national and global scales.
Art and Design
CCHSG understands the importance of delivering a broad and balanced curriculum and has an established and highly successful Art department supported by specialist Art Teachers and local visiting artists. As well as the importance of cultivating a love of the arts, there is a growing body of educational research to highlight the wider benefits of studying this subject which the department embraces and uses to enrich the curriculum offer.
Mathemetics
A high-quality mathematics education provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason logically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject. With our curriculum, we aim to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning, multiplicative reasoning, problem solving, progression, modelling, reflection, relevance, concrete-pictorial abstract (CPA) and linking, which are fundamental building blocks for developing resilience, leadership and responsibility. Mathematical knowledge and understanding is a fundamental skill for a wide range of subjects and for use in daily life.
Sixth Form
hen students leave our Sixth Form they will leave not only with an excellent set of A level results, but with a broad range of experiences. They achieve this by offering an exceptional variety of activities in addition to the A level courses, which aim to develop a highly personalised learning programme tailored to the needs of each student based on their strengths and areas of interest. Extended Project Qualification is available for those students wanting to further extend their academic qualifications. We broaden students’ experiences by fostering an active attitude of caring for the community we live and work in. This can be through our school prefect schemes, through charitable fundraising and other outreach schemes with our partner schools (primary, secondary and special needs). There is also an extensive range of extracurricular clubs and societies which aim to broaden an awareness of local, national and international issues.
Extracurricular Activities
The wide ranging extracurricular activities on offer contribute to the vibrancy and creativity of the school. Many subjects offer activities based on areas of the curriculum, such as Rosetta Stone language courses, inviting guest speakers into lessons or organising day trips and workshops. There are annual exchange trips to both France and Germany. The school employs Language Assistants in French and German, who provide additional curriculum support and extracurricular opportunities for students. As part of the extracurricular programme students also have the opportunity to try new skills based activities or to organise clubs and activities for younger students e.g. Art Club, Debating Society and Maths club. Most activities take place at lunchtime and after school, with occasional weekend experiences, day visits or workshops.
Selection Criteria: Selective
You Can view the results of the school on the website given below
Places at CCHSG are applied for through the Local Education Authority and allocated to students based on performance in the 11+ selection test. The purpose of the 11+ test is to enable grammar schools to identify students who have the potential to thrive in an environment which provides a highly academic curriculum, which also has depth and breadth, and offers a range of challenging pursuits. We do not charge fees and we welcome applications from students living in Essex and surrounding areas.
In Year Admissions
Applicants for places other than for the start of Year 7 will be tested if and when a place becomes available. The school holds an ‘enquiry list’ for applicants who wish to be considered for testing should a place become available. Where a vacancy does occur, all applicants on the enquiry list will be contacted and invited to sit the entrance tests. The tests are held at the discretion of the school. The tests and assessments will not aim to replicate the 11+ selection tests but will seek to establish whether the applicant can sustain the pace of the school’s classroom education, fit the levels of achievement of the relevant year group, and has sufficient knowledge and understanding to undertake the relevant year group’s existing programmes of study.
