Haberdashers' Aske's School for Girls

Description

WELCOME TO HABS - INDEPENDENT SCHOOL FOR GIRLS 4-18

Founded in 1875, Haberdashers’ Aske’s School for Girls is a leading independent day school for girls aged 4-18 and our academic results place us amongst the highest ranked schools in the UK.  We provide a challenging, positive, stimulating and secure community in which our students enjoy working hard to fulfil their potential. One of our unique features is the fact that we are based on the same campus as Habs Boys.  This provides us with the best of both worlds; a single-sex education in a co-educational environment.

Our pupils leave to take up places at top universities with many happy memories of their time here, returning later in their careers to support another generation of Habs Girls as they take their next steps into the wider world.

Admission Details

RAINBOW (4+ / RECEPTION)
There are approximately 40 places available each year.

  • All applicants are invited to an assessed group activity session, lasting about 45 minutes, in early January of the year of entry. The groups are organised by age – those of a similar birth month are grouped together. Twins are invited on separate dates.
  • The second stage involves a selected number of girls, with their parents, meeting the Head and Deputy Head of the Junior School. These informal meetings are an opportunity for parents to ask questions about the school and to establish whether they think it is the right place to educate their daughter. It is also an opportunity for the school to find out more about the child and the family and to establish whether the parents want the same kind of education that the school is offering and that they are in sympathy with the school’s ethos and values.
  • At 4+ the candidate’s nursery/pre-school will be asked to provide a short written reference.

YEAR 3 (7+)
There are approximately 10 places available each year.

  • All candidates attend a formal assessment consisting of a series of tests in reading, writing and mathematics, and take part in a group discussion in the Autumn term prior to the year of entry. Following this, a reduced number of candidates will be invited to return to attend a group activity morning in the Spring term. A selected number of girls are then invited, with their parents, to meet the Head and Deputy Head of the Junior School.
  • For those invited to attend the group activity morning the Head of the candidate’s current school will be asked to provide a written reference as to the candidate’s academic ability, attitude and behaviour, involvement in the School community, talents and interests, and any other special circumstances such as special educational needs, or disability. The reference may also include the results of tests taken at the school (such as NFER or SATs or the results of their baseline testing).

COACH FARES

Coach fees are billed termly and are determined by the number of days in each term.  It is possible to book one-way tickets, return journeys and (if a route is not full) casual tickets.  The costs range from £200-760 per term depending on the length of the term, the coach stop and whether or not you are purchasing a return journey or a one-way ticket.

Scholarships

ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS
Academic Scholarships are offered for entry at 11+ to candidates who have achieved outstanding results in the entrance examination and the subsequent interviews. We do not hold special scholarship examinations and no separate application is necessary. The value of scholarships is up to 50% of fees and the award is valid for the duration of the student’s time at Habs.

MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS
Music Scholarships are awarded at 11+ and occasionally at 16+ to students who show particular musical ability. Candidates must first pass the entrance examination before a music audition with the Director of Music is considered. Music scholarships can also be offered in conjunction with academic scholarships and bursaries. Parents who feel that their daughter is eligible should fill in a Music Scholarship application form which can be requested from the Admissions team.

BURSARIES
Bursaries are available for entry at 11+ and 16+.  They are means tested and made on the basis of an assessment of the income and assets of the family, which are subject to annual review.  Awards are made on a sliding scale, ranging from 10% to 100% of school fees.  Students holding full fee awards may also be given help with travel and other expenses. We are keen to encourage applications from parents whose daughters would benefit from attending Habs and who, in our judgement, would make a significant contribution to the life of the school but for whom finding the school fees would be difficult.

As a guide, free places may be awarded where total assessable household gross income is below £38,000. Where an offer of a free place is made, and a student uses the school coach service this will also be subsidised.  The ceiling for eligibility for financial support is approximately £80,000 gross. Between these two figures contributions towards fees will be on a sliding scale.

At 11+, awards may also take account of academic merit, and can be offered in conjunction with an Academic or Music Scholarship.
