King Edward VI Handsworth School is leading State Secondary school in Birmingham. This is a Selective school for kids age 11 to 18 years. Gender - Girls
King Edward VI Handsworth School for Girls is an Academy and member of the King Edward VI Academy Trust Birmingham and the King Edward VI Foundation. The school has been situated in Rose Hill Road, Handsworth since 1911. An extensive programme of building work has been carried out in recent years, including new DT and teaching facilities, a new library, science block and sports hall. We have created both a pastoral and a learning hub to support the emotional health and wellbeing of our students. The school boasts a large site with excellent facilities, we are also fortunate to have a large playing field for sporting activities and for students to enjoy during the summer months. King Edward VI Handsworth School for Girls may be steeped in tradition and history, something of which we are fiercely proud, but we are a forward-thinking and outward-facing school committed to preparing our students face and meet the challenges of a fast-paced and ever-changing world.
Key Stage 3
All students in Years 7-9 study Art, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Technology, English, French, German , Geography, History, Maths, Music, Physical Education, Physics and Religious Education. Students are assessed against our own carefully devised assessment scheme. In Year 9 the compulsory subjects of English, Mathematics and the three sciences start the GCSE courses and assess using GCSE grades 9 – 1.
Key Stage 4
GCSE options are made in the Spring Term of Year 9 and an Information Evening is held for students and parents every January. Students are provided with advice and guidance throughout the GCSE option process. In Years 10 and 11 all students study English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. In addition they have a statutory requirement to continue non-examination classes in PSHCE, General RS and Physical Education.
The Sixth Form
The vast majority of our students choose to remain at Handsworth to continue their students to A Level. Our options system is flexible to allow students to study those subjects about which they are passionate. Alongside those subjects offered at GCSE, Economics, Further Mathematics, Government and Politics and Psychology can all be studied at A Level. Students choose 3 A Level subjects to commit to over the two years of study.
PSHCE and Sex Education
One period per fortnight is set aside at Key Stage 3 with a further two periods set aside in Key Stage 4 for the delivery of PSHCE. Physical, Social, Health, Careers Education (PSHCE) is not an isolated curriculum area. It has a symbiotic relationship with all areas of School life including subject areas, pastoral concerns, social and economic factors and media exposure.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR
As a school community they believe that there is far more to education than the learning that takes place in the classroom and the collection of qualifications. Participation and engagement in extra-curricular activities allows students to develop their passions and interests, encourages the creation of new friendships and enables our students to experience different challenges. These experiences outside of the classroom help to build the strong community that we have here at King Edward VI Handsworth. There is always an activity available for those who want to get involved. From debate club, dissection society to musical theatre club, there really is something for everyone one and, as most of these clubs take place during our lunch break, all pupils can participate.
SEND
At King Edward VI Handsworth School, we endeavour to meet the needs of all students, including those who have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, as far as is compatible with the efficient use of school resources. They believe that every child matters and we work to the best of our ability to ensure that all barriers are lifted for students with SEND, so they can achieve their fullest potential and access the curriculum with ease; we believe that students with SEND are entitled to this provision
