Llanidloes High School may well be the happiest, high-achieving school in Wales. As a prior Inspector and Challenge Adviser, I had the privilege of supporting and evaluating secondary school provision up and down the country. When visiting Llanidloes, they was always struck by the vibrant and flourishing learning culture, deeply caring ethos and exceptional commitment of staff. Everyone goes the extra mile to ensure each and every pupil’s experience of school is as happy as possible. It is, therefore, a truly humbling privilege to be entrusted with the responsibility for overseeing the education of each and every precious child at Llanidloes High School. All of them at the school take this responsibility seriously, which is reflected in the splendid results they achieve. The school has outperformed the Welsh Government’s modelled outcomes for five successive years in the number of pupils achieving five GCSEs at Grade C or above, including English or Welsh and Mathematics. Only a tiny handful of schools across the country have managed that feat.

Llanidloes High School prepares young people with diverse abilities and backgrounds for a life of learning, service, leadership and personal fulfilment. We are committed to providing ‘Great Opportunities For All to Learn’ (Gofal means ‘care’ in Welsh). For many years, the Gofal ethos has helped create a happy, caring and stimulating learning environment where pupils flourish.As a dual stream school in the heart of Wales, we want our pupils to become fluent in the Welsh language. They want them to develop a secure understanding of how their identity is shaped by local and Welsh: history, religious and spiritual heritage, values, culture and social context. Alongside discovering their own individuality, they learn to respect others who are different from themselves.

Clubs
They have an exceptionally wide range of extra-curricular activities. All the main team games are offered and pupils successfully compete at county and international levels. They have a wealth of musical and theatrical talent. Local clergy regularly join them to helpthe children explore some of the most fascinating ultimate questions of life. The Art and Design & Technology areas showcase students’ work both within school and in local exhibitions.
Additional Learning Needs
‘The school provides valuable care, guidance and support for all pupils regardless of their needs. Effective support systems promote and encourage pupils’ wellbeing, attendance and academic progress.The provision for pupils with additional learning needs is effective. Worthwhile learning programmes and targeted interventions ensure that these pupils make the expected progress. A notable feature of the school is the manner in which pupils from the Autistic Spectrum Disorder Unit are integrated successfully into mainstream subjects to expand their opportunities and experiences.’
SMILE Club (peer support)
SMILE Club (Something to Make It a Little Easier) was started over 10 years ago when a Sixth Former was helping a younger pupil on her bus who was struggling with some friendship issues. We realised that several pupils would benefit from being able to talk to Sixth Formers about issues they may not want to discuss with their friends or teachers.Sixth Formers came up with the name and Mrs Jerman, as Head of Sixth Form, was trained by ChildLine to train Sixth Formers as peer mentors. Each year she trains Sixth Formers so that they have strategies to help with the various problems younger pupils might encounter. They also learn when and to whom to ‘pass on’ matters that are more serious.
