Mayville High School is Independent Secondary school in Selective for kids aged 2 to 16 (Gender - 2 to 16 )
Mayville has been at the heart of Southsea life since 1897 and, to this day, they continue to follow the founding philosophy of educating the 'whole child' – 'The head, the hand and the heart'. The ethos serves to instil a life-long love of learning in every pupil. Throughout the Nursery, Junior, Senior & Online Schools, studies and activities are inclusive and structured to meet the needs, challenge the expectations and exceed the goals of each individual. They are a split site: the school has four large teaching sites and our playing fields are at Cockleshell, Eastney, which is less than a 10 minute journey from the School. They are situated near Portsmouth’s rich historic heritage, a stone’s throw from the Solent and close to the city’s cultural wealth. Founded in 1897, there is a strong emphasis on traditional disciplines, yet Mayville adopts innovative teaching methods to help promote learning. The size is our strength; they are big enough to offer pupils a wide range of opportunities, yet small enough to treat each pupil as an individual. Class sizes are small, enabling each pupil’s individual learning needs to be fully met. To ensure that they provide a bespoke education to each child within the senior school, they split the forms into two so that the pupils are taught in sets of around 12. This is an unparalleled staff-pupil ratio in senior school education.
Nursery: 2-4 years. Early Years at Mayville High School
Based in the heart of Southsea, our Nursery School provides the best possible start for your child, as they take their very first steps out of the family home on their unique journey to discovering independence. Mayville is founded upon a ‘whole child’ educational philosophy and we employ this same approach with our very youngest boys and girls.Indoor spaces are light and open and, combined with small class sizes, allow children the room to play and discover. The Nursery has its own outdoor play area, which we use throughout the year. Housed within the Junior School site, they also benefit from shared facilities, including the main hall and the playing fields in Eastney. They draw upon school resources, such as specialist teaching in P.E, Languages and Performing Arts, in order to enrich learning opportunities. Children are integrated into the life of the school, whilst regular trips in our strollers and fleet of minibuses introduce them to the wider local community.
Pre-Prep & Junior School: 4-11 years
As an independent school, Mayville has always offered a ‘whole child’ approach to education, that values every child’s unique talents and interests. Small class sizes enable us to know each pupil and tailor their individual development throughout Junior School. They pride ourselves on being renowned as a creative school and we know that a number of parents choose Mayville specifically for this reason. They offer an independent curriculum that allows us to timetable lessons in dance, music, drama and visual arts, alongside regular performance opportunities. The pupils also benefit from flexibility and invaluable support when auditioning, performing or competing outside of school. However, it is our firm belief that creativity in learning is central to the development of essential problem-solving and lateral thinking skills in all children and this underpins our whole ethos. They offer a Gifted & Talented Programme, along with a well-established Learning Support Unit, where the specialist teachers help pupils with a wide range of learning differences. Every child at Mayville is encouraged to identify and achieve their own unique potential.
Senior School: 11-16 years
As an independent school, Mayville has always offered a ‘whole child’ approach to education, that values every child’s unique talents and interests. Small class sizes and tutor groups enable us to know each pupil and tailor their individual development, throughout Key Stages 3 & 4.Creativity is at the heart of this approach and they believe that all pupils benefit from active participation in creative pursuits. Many of the pupils advance to study the arts at a higher level or go into related careers; but all children benefit from a structured curriculum, centred on creative problem-solving, through timetabled lessons and a wealth of extra-curricular clubs and activities. The specialist PE department ensure that sport and physical activity is integral to all pupils’ personal development. Dedicated local facilities in Eastney, timetabled lessons and extra-curricular clubs provide opportunities to try a wide range of activities. For a small school, our sporting teams and individuals participate in a full calendar of competitive fixtures each term.
Mayville Online – digitally enhanced remote learning
Mayville Online is an enriched 'whole child' learning programme, offering the Mayville High School experience in your home environment. Pupils access and complete assignments using Google Classroom on tablet, mobile device or Google Chrome web browser, with remote access helping to overcome some of the barriers to education that might be presented by a traditional school experience. The online tutors can provide a full curriculum programme of study, offering you everything you would expect from a school, plus a lot more flexibility in tailoring the education to the specific needs of the pupil. This flexibility can be of enormous benefit to pupils with outside commitments or special educational needs.
