Facilities

Pre School
The Pre-School at Portsmouth High is a leading independent nursery in Portsmouth and welcomes children into a warm and inclusive environment which always puts their well-being first.Set in the extensive grounds of the Prep School in the heart of Southsea, the Pre-School is based in a light and modern building with access to a large wooded garden, a real oasis in an inner city environment, offering plenty of space for play and exploration.Pre-School teachers are highly qualified and get to know and understand each of the children in their care. The school offers an outstanding start for girls from the term of their third birthday (rising 3) up until they join Reception Class.

Prep
Girls in Pre-Prep and Pre-School use creative themes to explore traditional subjects and develop high level skills in reading, mathematics and across all subjects. The communication and language curriculum in the early years has a progressive phonics programme and French is taught from Pre-School. Right from the start we build firm foundations in mathematics to enable girls to progress confidently in their mathematical understanding. Digital literacy starts from an early age and girls develop skills in computing and technology. From Year 3 the curriculum is subject-based with specialist teaching in English, mathematics, science, computing, PE, music and languages, including Latin and Mandarin in Year 6. Learning outdoors is introduced from the start to accelerate and enrich learning. This is developed through our Forest and Beach School sessions but is incorporated in all areas. A resilience programme is an integral part of the curriculum. The approach creates rounded and confident learners and supports a seamless transition to the Senior School.

Senior
The Senior School curriculum is academically rigorous and enables girls to develop those significant intellectual skills that go beyond each academic discipline, to ensure they can use their knowledge in new situations and see connections between and within subjects.Such skills are fundamental if pupils are to achieve their maximum potential and develop as independent, focussed learners who are academically successful. In Years 7 and 8 in particular, the curriculum is based largely around subject specialisms, but seeks to maintain the collaborative enquiry-based approach developed in the Prep School.

Features

Things to note

Co Curriculuar
Portsmouth High School is committed to academic excellence and encouraging girls to be independent, creative and ambitious. This ethos is supported through the co-curricular programme. The girls are given the opportunity to take part in a wide range of enriching activities which are held during lunch break, before and after school.Participation in co-curricular activities plays an important part of school life and we strongly encourage all the girls to participate in one or more of the activities on offer to broaden their horizons and give them an opportunity to try something new. Many activities encourage girls to become team players and relate to their peers socially. Time management skills are improved and learning and excelling in a new activity helps to build self-confidence. Co-curricular activities require commitment and at the end of the programme pupils are encouraged to evaluate the activities they have chosen.

Sports
Portsmouth High School is delighted to announce work will soon begin on a new SuperSport asphalt multi-use games area with surrounding landscaping at the senior school. The development will create a vibrant competitive space with full size netball and tennis courts giving added opportunities to develop and enhance the school’s sport curriculum offer and fixtures programme.

Music
At Portsmouth High School music is all-inclusive and is one of the main showcases for creative talents. Everyone is willing to give music a try and, whether or not they take instrumental lessons or go on to pursue a career in music, all of the students enjoy participating in the numerous activities the school has to offer.

Drama
Drama is different. You don’t sit at a desk and you do a lot of talking and moving around. It is the lesson where imagination is the key element, along with the confidence to share ideas and physically to show your work in front of others. They aim to develop these aptitudes, along with understanding of how plays are made and performed. The practical design skills of costume, set design, lighting and sound are part of the drama experience: as well as acting, these are skills to be taken for the examination years. Drama changes your way of thinking, so that you are able to approach tasks with immediacy and energy.

Sixth Form
All girls also embark on an Extended Project, an independent research study which enables them to pursue an idea of specialist interest: it’s an ideal way of learning and practising the skills needed for success at undergraduate level – and universities love it.An ambitious enrichment programme, including a theory of knowledge course, which builds on the Sophia scheme in place throughout the senior school, presentation skills, cooking, financial wellbeing and personal fitness, completes the curriculum package. And there’s even more on offer outside the classroom.
