Description

Merrywood House Independent Special School is Independent Secondary school in Not recorded for kids aged 5 to 13 (Gender - 5 to 13 )

Merrywood was set up to ensure that every child is given the opportunity to thrive academically regardless of their trauma or circumstances. They offer a school of opportunity and an expectation that every member of the school community is treated equally and is safe and secure.Set up from 10 years’ experience of working within mainstream and pupil referral units across London and the South East of England, the experience of working with so many different settings has enabled us to develop a trauma informed therapeutic model to support children to reach their maximum potential.Children benefit from an individualised, inclusive and nurturing setting where they have the opportunity to explore deep-rooted issues and traumas through therapy. The core aim is to provide a nurturing space for children to grow educationally, emotionally, morally and socially. Children develop a deep understanding of themselves as an individual and a connected part of society. They learn to understand and value themselves and their unique offering and grow an appreciation of learning, realising their ability to engage with education.

Features

Things to note

Play Therapy
The Play Therapist works weekly with the children to use a wide range of play and creative arts techniques, mostly responding to the child’s wishes and helping them to process traumas. Play therapy aims to support the children’s social, emotional and behavioural needs.

Occupational Therapy
The Occupational Therapist supports the children’s physical, sensory, or cognitive barriers. They develop individual OT plans for our children to support their SEMH and physical needs. The OT uses a range of tools to increase children’s ability to engage in their learning and to feel safe and secure within the schools.

Educational Therapy
The role of the educational psychologist is to increase our children’s SEMH development and their ability to engage within learning. The EP provides staff with the tools and strategies they need to help children feel safe, secure and able to form healthy attachments within the schools. The EP is highly specialised in trauma and provides ongoing training and clinical supervision for staff, as well as providing whole school and individual child support and family therapy.

Speech and Language Therapy
Speech and Language Therapy is integrated into the curriculum and is based on a needs focused approach, specifically tailored to our individual children. The children access small, weekly social skills groups as well as 1:1 direct therapy, for speech, language, social or emotional needs, as and when it is required. This flexible and integrated approach allows for the most effective way of supporting children to learn, develop and generalise the skills learnt in therapy to the wider context and community.
