Reigate Grammar School is a mixed independent day school for ages 2 to 18.
Clubs & Activities
Through trying something new, developing established hobbies or embarking on programmes such as the Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Awards or the Combined Cadet Force, students gain vital life skills, learn about themselves and make friendships beyond their immediate network, often friendships that last a lifetime.
Trips & Expeditions
The academic curriculum on offer is supported by a wide range of trips which bring both classroom studies to life and help broaden students’ horizons. From South Africa to Iceland, France to Dubai, Surrey to Snowdonia, Belize to New York – learning beyond the classroom as we prepare today’s children to be global citizens, is really important. From history trips to the battlefields of the First World War; classics trips to Greece and biology trips to the tropics, pupils learn, grow and develop lifelong memories. Sports tours are run regularly both in the U.K. and abroad providing an excellent opportunity for students to develop their skills while experiencing new destinations and cultures. Some trips run annually, others on a 2 or 3 year cycle, but all students will have the opportunity to join trips during their time at RGS.
Drama
Co-curricular drama is a great strength of the school, with a busy programme which every child can be part of. There are usually three or four large-scale productions each year, in addition to evening showings of examination pieces, studio work, script and dance competitions. There are strong links with the music department with regular musicals staged. Productions in the last few years have included: Sweeney Todd, Far Away (in Reigate Caves), Much Ado About Nothing, The History Boys, Find Me, Guys & Dolls, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Brief Encounter, One Man Two Guvnors, Macbeth, Honk!, Dick Whittington and most recently Les Miserables and Love + Information. There are frequent visits to local and national theatres (over twenty-five each year) and regular visits by practitioners and touring theatre companies.
Music
The Music department values all students who are interested in music, whatever their experience and whatever style of music they are interested in. In addition to curricular music lessons, the school offers individual tuition. Lessons take place throughout the school day on a rotational basis to avoid disruption to academic progress. Lessons can be taken in any instrument. RGS provide free group tuition for music theory and aural training. All students are encouraged to join an ensemble, as playing and performing with others is an essential part of any musician’s development, not least because it’s a lot of fun! The school has an orchestra, a string ensemble, a swing band, six choirs, two concert bands, wind ensembles, a guitar group, a percussion ensemble, a brass ensemble, rock bands and many chamber groups. There is plenty of musical activity in which your son or daughter can involve themselves and all styles of music are encouraged.
Sport
Reigate Grammar School is renowned for its sport and prowess on the games field. Our games and PE programmes are designed to facilitate both the pursuit of excellence and ‘sport for all’ – offering a wide range of activities and sporting opportunities which put the development of young people at the centre of all we do. Many of these fixtures are played at RGS Hartswood, where we have 32 acres of playing fields including include two all-weather pitches for hockey and tennis and numerous grass pitches hosting cricket, rugby, football, athletics and ultimate frisbee fixtures and more besides. At the main school site there is a four lane 25metre indoor swimming pool, dance studio, netball and tennis courts, two fitness suites, multi use games area (MUGA) and a sports hall.
