Old Vicarage School is Independent Secondary school in Non-selective for kids aged 3 to 13 (Gender - 3 to 13 )
Welcome to the Old Vicarage School, an “OUTSTANDING/EXCELLENT” independent Nursery, Pre-Prep and Preparatory school for girls and boys aged 3 to 11 years. Established in 1933 the school was acquired by the Adshead family in September 2007 and has grown from strength to strength under their stewardship. In February 2015 the Independent School’s Inspectorate found OVS “EXCELLENT” in every category.
Nursery
The Old Vicarage School welcomes Nursery age children from the September after they reach 3 years old. This is the most usual point of entry to the school. The Nursery Class is open during term times, and additionally operates a Holiday Club in July and at Christmas. The Nursery is currently unable to accept children who are not joining the Old Vicarage School. The Nursery feels like a ‘home from home’ and this feeling permeates through the school until Year 6. You can be assured of close, personal attention at all times. Small classes and carefully selected, dedicated staff ensure that your child’s progress is consistent and often exceeds their age predicted ability.
Pre-Prep
After Nursery, the children move into the Reception Class. Here, the children continue to follow the EYFS Framework and in many instances go beyond it. The children enjoy outdoor learning as a significant part of their curriculum. Exploring in nature is a fantastic way of supporting their confidence, resilience and risk taking abilities.Reading is given a high priority. Children follow The Ruth Miskin, Read Write Inc. course as they take the first steps in learning to read. Children then move on to the Oxford Reading Scheme and beyond. From Reception to Year 2 all children read to a member of OVS staff every day. In most schools, children will read to an adult once a week. We think this is unsatisfactory! All children read to an adult every day up and keep a daily diary of their school and “at home” reading until the point that they are confident, independent readers.
Prep School
A broad and creative curriculum continues as the children enter Key Stage 2, (Year 3 to 6). The emphasis on the core subjects continues with high priority given to reading comprehension, grammar and spelling, as well as mathematics core skills, including a focus on developing a firm knowledge of their times tables and number bonds. A child is never held back. For example, we have children working on Year 6 level mathematics in Years 3 and 4 because they are able. Likewise, for children needing additional support, who have perhaps joined OVS later in their primary years, their progress in our care is consistently outstanding.
Pre-Prep Extra Curricular Activities
Children enjoy the opportunities offered through our termly extra-curricular programme. Nursery and Reception children enjoy a variety of clubs before school, at break times and after school.Clubs change regularly and have included: Dance, Soccerstars, Gardening & Bushcraft, Karate, Junior Sports, Tennis, Mini-Tag Rugby, Drama, as well as Musical Theatre, Pet Club, Yoga Bugs, Chess, Ukulele, Homework Club and singing in House Choirs.
Prep Extra Curricular Activities
The wide variety of after-school clubs and activities are for children of all ages to enjoy. Some activities take place before school, during break times, as well as after school. Dance classes have included ballet and street dance and they run creative classes for those playing musical instruments or interested in arts and crafts. We try to cater for all interests.
