The Old Vicarage School

Description

The Old Vicarage School is Independent Primary school in Richmond upon Thames for kids aged 3 to 10 (Gender - Girls )

The carefully balanced education provided by the Old Vicarage, Richmond’s only independent preparatory school for girls, offers your daughter a first class start to life. With our non-selective entry, superbly resourced classrooms, excellent teaching and small class sizes we create an environment in which girls of all abilities can thrive.  Reassuringly, if you ask any of our girls, they will tell you with perfect honesty that they love coming here. At the Old Vicarage we make school a very happy experience. They are equally proud of the all-round education the girls receive; whether it be musical, dramatic, artistic or sporting. Girls develop confidence, self-discipline and respect for others. We are based in a beautiful Grade 2* listed “castle” on Richmond Hill and, while we retain traditional values, we have a clear vision for the future. Our magnificent new ICT suite, adoption of Firefly as our VLE and commitment to enhancing the sporting provision for the girls, will attest to this and new developments are planned for the coming years.

Facilities

Pre-School
The Little Vic is our pre-school class for girls aged 3-4 and is our first point of entry point for the Old Vicarage School. Girls are given the option of 5 mornings, 5 mornings and 3 afternoons (afternoons fixed to Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) or 5 full days for the first two terms and by the third term we expect all girls to be attending for 5 full days to best prepare them for life in Reception. The Little Vic is situated just around the corner from the main school in the Vineyard Life Church and girls will have the opportunity to come up to the main school twice a week for library and PE lessons and also to experience life in a Reception classroom.

Lower School
The Lower School, for girls from Reception to Year Two, forms the foundation for the education of our pupils.  In Reception, we provide an easy transition from Little Vic. Girls are given a thorough grounding in phonics and reading and will be taught to recognise and use numbers with a real understanding.  We also believe that the Reception year establishes a secure environment so that the girls enjoy coming to school and in which they will flourish and be able to learn easily.  Our small class sizes and a teacher and teaching assistant in each class ensure the girls get the best possible start.

Upper School
They use the National Curriculum as the basis of our teaching but extend the girls and broaden their education in so many ways.  Whilst having a Form teacher, who will provide pastoral support and teach the girls at least one subject, the girls are introduced to specialist teaching and the knowledge and passion of real enthusiasts in each subject.    They will also rise to the challenges of following a timetable, organising themselves to have the right books and resources at the right time and being where they should be – all excellent preparation for senior schools.

Features

Things to note

After School Care
The school operates a supervised activity led after school club for all our girls from 3:15 – 6:00pm. During this time, the girls will be provided with a complimentary snack and drink, take part in organised activities, board games, reading, occasional DVDs and, from 5:00pm, some more active games using the playground and hall. They will also have a quiet area to complete homework, which will be supervised but unassisted.

Physical Education and Games
The aim of PE and Games at the Old Vicarage School is to develop confident individuals by allowing them to try new skills and to encourage girls of any skill level to develop their physical skills and fitness in both team and individual sports. Lessons are taught by specialist staff who teach physical education throughout the school.

Clubs
After a busy school day the school does not stop. There are after school clubs available to all girls on Monday to Thursday.  These vary from term to term and will include squad practices for different sports, choir, chess, different arts and craft clubs, dance in different forms, creative ICT and many more.  All are great fun and allow the girls to explore new skills, develop their own particular interests and get to know girls in other year groups better.  Most clubs are run by our own staff and are free but a few incur a charge to pay for materials or for outside instructors.

Drama
They believe that drama can play a major role in a girl’s development. Our aim is to build confidence and encourage creativity through activities such as mime, improvisation, character acting, physical theatre and script work.Drama in the Lower School is taught by the Form Teacher. In the Upper School, Drama is an integral part of English lessons and is supported by the form teachers. In this way, the skills of natural performers are refined and even the most reticent girl is coaxed out of her shell.

Music
Music plays a very important part in the life of the school. All the girls have regular music lessons with a specialist music teacher and will be taught to appreciate the music of many cultures and generations. A love of singing is fostered through those lessons and through the many opportunities to practise; from assemblies and hymn practice to performances and recitals. The focus is on developing skills but also confidence and the ability to listen to others around them. All girls are taught to play the recorder and introduced to the violin but we also offer individual lessons in piano, singing, flute, violin, clarinet, saxophone instruments and guitar in our newly built music suite.
