Royal Grammar School Junior School is a Independent Primary School for kids aged 7 to 18 (Gender - Mixed).
Newcastle upon Tyne Royal Grammar School (RGS) is a leading independent day school for boys and girls aged 7 -18 years. Located on Eskdale Terrace in Jesmond, in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne, the school benefits from excellent transport links with students travelling to RGS from all over the region. RGS is a thriving place, with over 1300 students, including more than 250 in the Junior School, which shares the same site as the Senior School. The Sixth Form is one of the largest in the independent sector with more than 340 students. The school became fully co-educational in 2008 and today girls make up 46% of the student population at RGS. RGS is a special place, known and respected throughout the whole country as well as the North East. It's a place where aspirations are high, results are outstanding and opportunities are endless. Expectations are high and the students go on to study highly selective courses at the most sought-after universities, but also leave the school realising that life outside the classroom has been equally beneficial.
Junior School
The RGS Junior School has developed significantly in recent years and they now have over 260 students in total, with three classes per year group (from Year 3 to Year 6). When children join the Junior School they enter an environment of exciting extra–curricular opportunities and a modern 'grammar-school' education of challenge and pace. The best of modern technology is employed by a dedicated and energetic team of teachers who look to develop the potential of each individual in their care. Last year, the school was ranked 6th nationally in The Sunday Times' list of Top 100 Prep Schools. Such high achievement is well-founded upon a broad base of extra-curricular activity and classroom curricular provision, designed to harness the enthusiasm and interest of the students. The call of 'One School, One Team', sets the tone for an ethos of collegiality, with everyone urged to play their part for the benefit of all.
Sport
At RGS, they view sport as a fundamental vehicle to develop lifelong skills and character in the pupils. They aim to encourage and promote the following values, that sit within the RGS vision, as part of the school's physical education, games and sporting ethos.
Co-Curricular
At RGS, life outside of the classroom is just as varied, challenging and rewarding as life within it. The Co-curricular programme is second to none, with first class opportunities in sport, music, drama, clubs and societies, and much more. All students are encouraged to get involved in a wide range of activities, regardless of ability or previous experience. The possibilities are endless and students themselves are encouraged to make suggestions and introduce new opportunities. The Co-curricular programme is something we pride ourselves on as they firmly believe that those students who involve themselves fully in co-curricular life usually excel within the classroom too – and have fun along the way.
Performing Arts:
Performing Arts are core to the life of RGS, and all students, from Y3 to Y13 are positively encouraged to participate. There really is something for anyone and everyone, whether it is:
- experiencing music, drama or dance as part of the curriculum;
- joining in one of the many performing arts co-curricular clubs;
- committing to a production or performing at our regular events, or;
- accessing the services of our many, incredibly talented Visiting Music Teachers (VMTs).
The benefits of participating in performing arts at RGS are vast, from learning new technical skills, working collaboratively, building confidence, having fun and - most importantly - experiencing joy and finding a lifelong passion. We are committed to providing broad opportunities for anyone to participate, as well as the stretch and challenge of our most ambitious performers.
