Each girl in Senior House is a member of one of the three Houses which meet regularly under the leadership of a Lower Sixth House Captain and Deputy.
There is a healthy and enthusiastic air of competition between the Houses which organise assemblies, raise money for charity and arrange performing arts festivals as well as competing in a wide range of sporting activities.
Outdoor Pursuits are thriving at Westfield, with several opportunities offered to the girls at each stage of their school career. Induction Days are held for the Year 7 girls on their first day at Westfield with an emphasis on teamwork which allows the girls to really get to know each other. There are opportunities for residential visits to various outdoor centres as well as enjoying overnight camps at school. Navigation and leaderships skills are developed as the girls move up the school with opportunities to enjoy walking and camping in the Northumberland countryside.
Upper Four spend a week in Cumbria staying at an Outdoor Centre in the Lake District. The week has a cross-curricular theme which includes English and Drama as well as personal development through outdoor and adventurous activities and teamwork. New entrants to Westfield at this age quickly settle in and make new friends. Girls may choose to do their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award. Girls also take part in outdoor pursuits and adventurous activities through Round Square conferences and visits.
Everyone is expected to play a full and active part in a busy programme of extra-curricular activities ranging from trampolining, running, athletics and design club to the UNESCO club, Passport for Life and Environmental groups. We aim to develop in the girls environmental awareness, not only in their thinking but also in a practical sense.
Selection Criteria: Selective
Girls are welcome to join Westfield at any stage of their academic life. Westfield welcomes applications from girls of many different backgrounds. All the girls are treated as individuals. We are not a highly selective school but all applicants are assessed before a place is offered.
Westfield is totally committed to developing each child’s full potential. Our classes are kept to a maximum of 20, enabling teachers to give each pupils individual attention.
Girls entering into Year 7 (Upper Three) in Senior House will be invited to sit the 11+ Entrance and Scholarship Examination in the January prior to their admission in September whilst they are in Year 6. 11+ and 13+ candidates who are registered are also invited for a taster day in November, so they can become more familiar with the school before Entrance test day. Scholarships are awarded on academic merit. PE, performing arts and creative arts scholarships are also available to 11+, 13+ and 16+ entrants.
Year 7 Assessment Day 2022
Girls enrolling for a Y7 place in September are warmly invited to our Assessment Day, this will take place on Wednesday 26 January 2022
Choosing the right school for your daughter is one of the most important choices you will make. Please telephone the School Office on 0191 255 3980 to make an appointment to come and visit our very busy, friendly school. We would be delighted to welcome you to Westfield.
How to apply/admissions process
The normal process for new entrants is to make an appointment to see the school; if you can’t come on Open Day in October; to us every day is open day. If you would like to visit the school please give the office a call and we will be happy to arrange an appointment that suits you and your individual requirements.
Once you decide that you would like to make an application for Westfield you would then complete a registration form and we can then make arrangements for your daughter to spend a day with us.
Our usual practice is to invite your daughter to spend a day with the year group she will be entering. For entry into Senior House this day would usually include taking Maths and English tests to help us establish learning levels.
After this day you will receive a formal letter usually offering a place in Westfield. It is then up to you how quickly you would like to proceed, some girls like to join us as soon as possible, others come at Easter to help settle in before the new year but most girls start in the following September.
