Combined with the warmth of the welcome from our staff and children, you will quickly realise that Russell House is a family school with a very special atmosphere; a calm, secure, happy environment based on respect for each other and our environment. Our co-educational school in the village of Otford is ideally situated for families from Sevenoaks, Orpington and surrounding areas.
Pre-Prep
The Pre-Prep classes are busy and fun, providing the best possible start for your child's education. Children join Russell Robins at the age of 2 and progress through Nursery, Transition and Form 1, before moving into the Main School. These years are very important in children's development as core skills and attitudes to learning are established that will take children on to success in the future. Key to the approach in the Pre-Prep is not just what they teach, but how they teach it. Activities are underpinned by solid educational principles and rigour to provide a clear progression of skill and knowledge development. In addition, the teaching methods incorporate key characteristics of effective learning: play and exploring, active learning and creating and thinking critically.
Main School
Children enjoy a broad-based academic curriculum in the Main School and an abundance of extra-curricular activities. By encouraging children to join in and aim high from an early age, they see exceptional levels of achievement in every aspect of school life. They promote excellence and achievement of each child within an inclusive environment, where every child participates in the whole curriculum. Recognising that children develop at different speeds, they make creative use of the timetable and our staff to support and extend individuals and ability groups. The success of our approach is plain to see in our track record for the 11-plus exam and in independent school entry examinations at 11, when children regularly attain academic, music and sports scholarships.
Outings and workshops
Children experience their first school outing when they are in the Russell Robins, picking strawberries at a local farm with parents and carers. Moving up through the school, they enjoy regular outings as well as a rich programme of visitors and workshops within school. They explore local historic houses, museums and castles, investigate rivers at Horton Kirby and more.
Selection Criteria: Selective
There is no selection of children to the school. However, before children enter the Main School (F2-7), they are tested in maths and reading. We do not reject children on the basis of test results but the results may provide indication that extra help is required. Entry at the beginning of Year 6 is rare but, where it does occur, parents should have a clear plan for their choice of secondary school that will suit the ability of the child. The school reserves the right to decline entry to a child entering Russell House for whom we feel such a placement would be detrimental to the child or the other children in the year.
