The New Beacon School is Independent Secondary school in Non-selective for kids aged 4 to 14 (Gender - 4 to 14 )
The New Beacon is a place of energy and success, for individual boys and for the entire school community. They know what makes boys tick – from the sensitive to the ebullient – and I have no doubt they achieve more here than in any school I have led. A clear mission, high expectations and excellent teaching lead to achievement: they can all be found in this Prep School. In the classroom, on the sports field, in the music room, the art, design and technology departments, or even in the way members of the school community support each other, New Beacon boys strive for personal excellence. It is the ambition to help them in this and in reaching their full potential.
Nursery
The Nursery is one of the key points of entry to the School and we accept girls and boys in the term they are rising three years of age. From Reception to Year 8, The New Beacon will remain a boys’ school. The Nursery offers a warm and stimulating environment where great care is given to make all children feel safe, comfortable, and nurtured. We offer experienced, highly qualified staff within our happy and caring New Beacon family. A wide range of exciting learning activities is provided to ensure the development of your child’s innate curiosity whilst embedding lifelong skills which encompass the seven specific areas of learning within the Early Years Foundation Stage.
Pre-Prep
The Pre-Prep (Reception to Year 2) forms the foundation of The New Beacon in all senses. The ethos is that of a family, which needs each individual to function properly – the teachers are committed to providing a firm base on which to build not only academic skills, but the ability to socialise, share and laugh and that the boys understand that they play a central role too. Each child knows that he is important and develops a sense of self through sharing of good work and achievements in assembly, involvement in the way their school is run and working with boys in different year groups, imparting skills, knowledge and humour. A careful balance is found between introducing core concepts, independent thinking skills and ensuring that children are happy and settled in the school.
Junior School
Years 3 and 4 are housed in the spacious Junior School building, overlooking the wildlife pond. These two pivotal years teach the boys to become independent, inquiring learners, introducing them to new topics of study and experiences.Continuing in small classes, the boys benefit from both the dynamic, tailored input of their form teacher and the specialised teaching of Science, Music, ICT, Swimming, Games, DT and Art, giving them a taste of the freer flowing day of the Middle School. Many boys now learn one of a diverse choice of musical instruments and have the opportunity to try judo, tennis, athletics, hockey, fencing, sailing and a number of other after school activities. Such as Spanish and German clubs which gives them a head start in learning languages. They are also able to join LCM Drama, Street Dance, Chess and Relax Kids all of which are very popular.
Middle School
The aim of the Middle School is to give boys the opportunity to take on new and exciting challenges, whether they are entering Year 5 and moving into the main school for the first time, or progressing into Year 6 with confidence and expectation.Boys will increase their independence but will continue to be guided and nurtured throughout their daily routine. A boy’s time in the Middle School will be busy and fruitful. Boys are encouraged to work to the best of their ability in the classroom as well as to develop further their talents in Sport, Music, Art and Drama.
Senior School
For over 100 years, the structure of The New Beacon was founded on preparing boys for departure at 13 having taken the Common Entrance exam (to independent senior schools) or a scholarship.Since 2020, with fewer senior independent schools requiring Common Entrance and using their own entrance examinations as well as the ISEB pre-test, the school has embarked on a review of the curriculum to take into consideration the entrance requirements for senior school destinations.
Activities
The nursery children have access to the first class facilities within The New Beacon’s large 22-acre site as well as the dedicated Early Years outdoor learning area and an enclosed adventure playground. They enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities which includes gardening in our dedicated school garden, woodland activities in our newly built outdoor classroom and the surrounding woods, pond dipping, nature walks and a variety of arts & crafts. They also benefit from a whole host of indoor activities where they interact with the specialist teachers in music, swimming and physical activity. Nursery children join our Pre-Prep pupils in specialist workshops, festivals and celebrations.
Co-Curricular
The exposure to a wide variety of activities and skills beyond the formal classroom not only broadens the experience of an individual, but it also helps to ensure a rounded education which enhances personal confidence levels.Whether it be the adrenaline rush of performing on stage, the joy of making music in a group, scoring a goal on the sports field, exposure to culture via an art gallery visit or learning a new opening gambit on the chess board, opportunities abound at The New Beacon.
