St Michael's Catholic Grammar School is leading State Secondary school in London. This is a Selective school for kids age 11 to 18 years. Gender - Girls
St. Michael’s is a very special place, it is first and foremost a Catholic school; the ethos implanted here by the Sisters of the Poor Child Jesus who founded this school. The trustees, governors and staff remain committed to enabling our students become the person God intended them to be; supporting them to make sense of this complex world and to seek out their unique purpose in life. St Michael’s is a place of spiritual formation – we recognise that Jesus has taught us that we should “love one another as he loved us” – and this gives a focus to the pastoral support we offer our young people
Key Stage 3
The KS3 curriculum is designed to engage, challenge and inspire our gifted students. The Catholic Ethos is at the heart of our curriculum and Religious Studies lessons are an opportunity for our pupils to explore, discuss and understand their own faith. All classes lead a Mass on Friday lunchtime and pupils take an active part in whole school, masses, contributing as altar servers, musicians and performers. The pupils learn about other world faiths both through their classroom experience and first hand by visiting other places of worship.
Key Stage 4
At St Michael’s, we provide our students with a curriculum which is suitable for them, which enables them to open doors to career pathways in the future and which provides them with a broad and balanced range of subjects. Undeniably, GCSEs are part of a career pathway – but we recognise that the learning process is not about gaining paper qualifications, it is about enriching our lives and providing an education in the wider sense. As a relatively small secondary school, we are not able to provide all possible subjects at GCSE, however, our GCSE offer is surprisingly wide considering our size. Our curriculum is not static – over time it responds to the requests, interests and preferences of our students.
Key Stage 5
In the Sixth Form, the normal course of study is three subjects, although students studying Further Maths will study four subjects at A Level. The following subjects are taught to Advanced Level: RS, English, History, Geography, Economics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Art, Italian, French, Spanish, Psychology, and Politics each year according to need and staff availability. Students are also prepared for the Oxford and Cambridge and other University subject examinations. All students in the sixth form follow a Religious Education course. In Year 12 the students follow a structured Extension programme which includes; study skills, First Aid and Yoga. European Work Experience and Community Service are also arranged for Years 12 and 13.
Extra Curricular
Extra-curricular activities include Team Tournaments in sports like netball, tennis, table-tennis, badminton, volleyball, cricket and athletics. There is also the opportunity to participate in football, street dance, cheer-leading, running clubs and Outward Bound Activities. Trips abroad like exchange visits are arranged. Residential field study courses in Geography and Biology are organised, as well as day visits to various centres within easy reach of London. Retreats are arranged for various year groups at centres close by. There are choirs, orchestras and other ensembles as well as drama and other group activities. Societies of various kinds flourish each year according to the varied interests of the students e.g. Veterinary Society, Physics Society, Environmental Society, British Sign Language Society, Games Society.
Music
The Music Department at St. Michael’s consists of the Director of Music and a team of 14 peripatetic teachers. Many students at St. Michael’s learn an instrument at school, with over 200 individual lessons taking place every week. Students can start to learn an instrument in any year group of the school, whether a beginner or experienced player, and applications for lessons can be handed in at any point during the year. Interested students should ask the Director of Music for an application form. Some support is available for families in financial need, and the school has a limited supply of instruments that can be hired.
