The Coopers' Company and Coborn School is leading State Secondary school in Upminster. This is a Non-selective school for kids age 11 to 18 years. Gender - Mixed
The school is (since 2005) a non-selective school described by Ofsted as "an exceptional school of real excellence". The school excels at Performing Arts and Sports. In 2004 as part of the European Year of Education through Sport it won the award of "Europe's most sport minded school".There have been no tests since 2001 nor interviews since 2004 for admission. Current applications are made via application form completed by the prospective students' parents and, months later, by a second form completed by the students themselves. This is not an examination but is heavily scrutinized. The school is heavily oversubscribed with approximately 5 applicants for each of the 180 places (over 900 applicants per year group). Due to this issue, Coopers' and Coborn School has appeared on an episode of Panorama, filmed by the BBC, to address this issue.
Curriculum
In Year 7 all students follow courses in: English, Mathematics, Science, Technology, Computer Science, a Modern Foreign Language, Geography, History, Religious Studies, Art, Music, Philosophy for Children, and Physical Education.
Year 8 students follow a similar pattern with the introduction of a second Modern Foreign Language. This structure is continued into Year 9.
During Year 9, the students choose the subjects they wish to continue with, or start for the first time, at GCSE.
In Years 10 and 11 certain subjects remain compulsory whilst others remain within the choice of the students.
Compulsory subjects are, English language and literature, Mathematics, Science (double award), a Modern Foreign Language, RS and core PE. Students can then choose from Art, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Business, Computer Science, Design and Technology, Drama, Food Preparation and Nutrition, French, Geography, German, History, Media Studies, Music, Physical Education, Spanish and Triple Science.
All students at Key Stage 4 are taught in mixed ability classes, with the exception of English, Mathematics and Science, where students are broadly set according to ability.
The majority of students progress into the Sixth Form and then go on to further education, including Oxford and Cambridge Universities.
The Sixth Form has approximately 460 students.
All students at Key Stage 5 follow A Level study programmes and are taught in mixed ability classes. The majority will complete 3 A Levels. However, a minority of the most able students can study 4 A Levels. For some students there is also the opportunity to study the Extended Project Qualification. We have a comprehensive non-qualification curriculum, which encompasses opportunities such as enrichment and work shadowing.
Sixth Form
The aim of these pages is to provide students and their parents with as much information as possible about the school Sixth Form. We feel it gives a real flavour of our special community and we hope it is of use to both existing and prospective students and their parents.Choosing the right community for post-16 study is a difficult one, but we feel we offer an outstanding level of support and provision for all the students in our care in one of the most academic, yet supportive Sixth Forms in the country.
Extra Curricular
It is the belief that students who are engaged in activities ‘beyond the classroom’ develop many personal skills including leadership, teamwork, communication and resilience which are essential for success in the modern world. Life is competitive; one must be prepared to tackle challenges to achieve when the odds are against them. School is a perfect place to learn this important trait. Being a student at Coopers’ Coborn allows access to a wealth of competitive opportunities.
