The Saint John Henry Newman Catholic School is a very distinctive community which unequivocally works to be a living Christian community in which each child and young adult is known and loved for who they are. Key Stage 3 - Year 7, 8 & 9
On entering the school, students are placed in mixed ability tutor groups which will form the basis of much of the teaching that takes place in Year 7. Later in the year student groupings are rearranged in Maths and Languages so as to accelerate the learning of the most able students and support those who would benefit from some more consolidation work in the subject area.A small number of students âfollow a 'core curriculum' pathway. In this way, they are able to tailor lessons appropriately, supporting those who need more time to assimilate new knowledge. The degree of support students need is regularly monitored and where appropriate students are moved into the mainstream and given support within those classes to enable them to continue to make progress.
Key Stage 4 - Year 10 & 11 (GCSEs)
At The Saint John Henry Newman Catholic School, they offer a broad curriculum at Key Stage 4, with a wide range of academic, creative and vocational courses. A large part of the curriculum is compulsory for all students but there is also an element of choice which means that students can shape their own learning programme in Key Stage 4 according to their interests and future education and career aspirations.In addition to a compulsory core of English, Mathematics, Religious Education, Science and Games, there are option blocks from which students can choose subjects which match their interests and ability.The subjects available include: Art, Art Graphics, Art Textiles, Business Studies, Computing, Dance, Drama, Design Technology, Film Studies, Geography, History, Modern Languages: French and Spanish, Music, PE, and Statistics. They offer a small number of high-value vocational courses Cambridge National Courses in courses in Child Development and Sports Science and the WJEC Award in Catering
YOUTH CONNEXIONS
They have a number of staff who undertake roles in career advice and education. Mrs Brown is responsible for the Year 10 Work Experience programme and also with providing careers education support.We have an advisor from Hertfordshire Youth Connexions who visits the school regularly for one-to-one appointments and to support options evenings.

Your first port of call if you have any concerns about your own wellbeing or that of another student is your form tutor. You should feel free to approach them with any concern, whether that be do do with your academic studies or for issues to do with your health, relationships with other students, issues at home or any other matter.Your Learning Coordinator is also someone who could be approached to help and can refer you to the pastoral support team, the school counsellors, peer mentors or other outside agencies and professionals that can help.
