Description

VLC offers therapeutic and caring alternative education for young people who are unable to access mainstream education. VLC works with children with SEN and EHCPs and  those at risk of exclusion. Many of our students have been or are school refusers, and/or have attachment issues or trauma. 

As a school we offer a broad and balanced curriculum taught 1-1 or in small groups, covering the national curriculum where possible. Our holistic approach not only focuses on students academic learning, but also students social and emotional learning, preparing students for success at adulthood and supporting the wider family alongside other professionals. We also offer various forms of therapy and offsite activities to meet their needs. We are delighted to be an Outstanding school

Facilities

  • With a focus on academic learning, emotional literacy and self esteem, VLC works with a variety of pupils - some pupils at VLC are aiming to return to mainstream, whilst others join roll and stay learning with them.
  • VLC is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and ​expects all staff, volunteers and parents to ​share this commitment.

The broad and balanced curriculum is intended to identify current starting points and rapidly fill in gaps in learning, particularly in literacy and numeracy. They find strengths, build on current skills and widen the learning experiences of children and young people to develop a deeper love for learning.

Admission Details

The admissions process is as follows: 

  • First contact made by school/parent/referring party. Where a student is enrolled in a school, the school should be consulted in the referral. 
  • Visit arranged.
  • Visit takes place with young person, parent/carer, key representative from the school or agency/department and the VLC Principal/Senior Teacher. 
  • Referral confirmed and timetable agreed. 
  • Learner Information Form (LIF), Learner’s Statement (if applicable), and Risk Assessment forms all completed.
  • Student begins attending VLC, following an induction programme as outlined in Student Induction Policy. Students and parents will be given a copy of Student Induction Pack, containing information on timetables, curriculum, safeguarding, health and safety, bullying etc. Students will be asked to sign a Behaviour Contract when they start.
  • VLC maintains regular contact with the student’s parent/carer and commissioner, providing feedback on the student’s attendance, progress, aptitude for learning, behaviour, wellbeing and safeguarding as well as any other issues which may arise.
