Wellesley House is Independent Secondary school in Not applicable for kids aged 2 to 13 (Gender - 2 to 13 )
They firmly believe that children who are happy and inspired succeed. The broad curriculum, exceptional pastoral care and nurturing environment at Wellesley helps to foster the individual strengths of every pupil.Academic success is a priority, and the pupils benefit from small classes, superb facilities and dedicated, talented teachers. They are proud of the excellent results that the pupils achieve in their entrance exams to a wide range of the UK’s top public schools. However, at Wellesley education is so much more than just what is learned in the classroom. The aim is to lay strong foundations, and teach the pupils vital life skills that will help them to succeed throughout their life.
Pre Prep
From the stability of the pre-prep, children from lower nursery to Year 3, all benefit from a family friendly feel where class teachers embed a love of learning. It is from the secure foundations of Junior House that children feel confident to explore all that Wellesley has to offer. Whether swimming in the school pool, choir, exploring in the orchard gardens, playing sport, weekly Beach school sessions, ballet classes or drum lessons; all children are able to follow their interests and engage in new experiences. The curriculum is tailored to the children’s individual interests and needs, the subject matter of topic-led learning changes depending on the cohort. Phonics is introduced as soon as a child is ready. Alongside the need to learn the skills of decoding for reading, they value highly pleasure for reading and children are encouraged to choose books from our library and all teachers read aloud to classes on a daily basis. The maths teaching is practical and hands on, with childrenpogressing from using concrete materials to pictorial representations and finally abstract concepts. By the time the children reach Year 3 they are taught by many of the subject specialists from the prep school ready for a smooth transition to the main school in Year 4.
Prep
Every child is kept informed of their progress and effort throughout the term, and has a tutor who support and helps them to identify where they can make improvements. If additional educational support need is identified we have a strong support team on hand, and extra tuition can be provided for those who require it.The majority of the prep school classrooms are located in the main school building, and all meals are eaten in the main dining room.
Boarding
Boarding is almost nothing like it was thirty years ago. These days boarding is comfortable and homely bedrooms, hanging out in the kitchen with friends making snacks, or watching Netflix in the boarders’ sitting room. It might be spending the whole week in the boarding house, or even just one or two nights a week. It’s going home for the weekend, or it’s staying in to enjoy a trip to the cinema or bowling alley with your friends. It’s hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows, or the Tuck cupboard on a Wednesday afternoon.
Sports
All pupils are encouraged to embrace sport and games for all, with access to specialist staff and Wellesley’s outstanding facilities and extensive grounds. There is some timetabled physical activity every day, and the children are taught basic skills, and introduced to a variety of sports, including football, hockey, tag rugby, cricket, gymnastics and tennis, as well as weekly swimming lessons. Competitive fixtures begin from Year 3.
Creative Arts
Class music lessons focus on singing and the use of instruments (percussion, ocarina and recorder) while individual or shared instrumental lessons are available from Year 1. All pupils are part of the pre-prep choir and take part in group musical performances throughout the year.
Activities
There is a structured programme of activities and clubs, which are available from Year 1. Clubs and activities on offer include: arts and crafts, ball games, cooking, gardening, ICT, drama and musical ensembles. All pupils are able to stay for after school clubs until 6pm (and supper is included).
