Features

Things to note

  • They offer a wide range of sport with sessions each week dedicated to football in the Michaelmas term, hockey in the Lent term, and cricket in the summer term. Junior boys also have weekly swimming lessons throughout the year.
  • All boys learn the piano and one other orchestral instrument, with a 30-minute lesson on each per week as part of the standard curriculum.Years 5-8 all play in one of the two school orchestras, rehearsing for 40 minutes on Saturday mornings (when Year 4 are usually at home).
  • A highlight of the school year are the plays that take place towards the end of the summer term. These productions offer a chance to perform in entirely different circumstances from those the boys are used to as musicians.

Admission Details

They welcome enquiries all the year round. Boys start at the Choir School in Year 4 when they are eight, so a good time to get in touch is in Year 2 or 3, but even if you have missed the boat, it is still worth contacting us since, for the right candidate, they can often make a space available. The first point of contact is Jennifer Benjamin in the Choir School office (email: [email protected] or telephone: 020 7654 4918). She will be happy to talk to interested parents and steer you in the right direction. They would always encourage prospective candidates to attend a Chorister Experience event to give them a feel for what it might be like to be a chorister here.

For those who decide that they would like to make a preliminary application the steps are usually as follows:

  • An informal brief audition with the Organist and Master of Choristers
  • An invitation to attend a choral service at the Abbey sitting close to the choir so that boys can gain a feel for what it might be like to be a chorister
  • A visit to the school involving a slightly longer audition, some simple academic tests and some time spent in class. See also What to expect on the Assessment day
  • An opportunity for parents to visit the school, to meet the headmaster and discuss with him at some length whether or not this might be a suitable environment for their son
  • The formal offer of a place

Fees

From September 2021 the school fees will be £3,090 per term.

Scholarships

For those parents for whom this would be an impossible burden, additional bursaries are available on a means-tested basis so that a musically talented boy should never be denied a place here simply on financial grounds.

Further information on fees and bursaries is available from the Bursar.
