The Fan Museum, which opened in 1991, is the world's first museum dedicated to the preservation and display of hand fans. It is located within two grade II* listed houses that were built in 1721 within the Greenwich World Heritage Site on Croom's Hill in southeast London, England.

The Fan Museum is home to a diverse collection of fans from around the world, dating from the 12th century to the present day. Our collections are displayed in changing exhibitions exploring the different themes which have inspired fan makers throughout history: politics, fashion, fine art and architecture to name but a few.

  • Explore the Collections: Gathered from across the world, our diverse collections span 1,000+ years of fan history & culture. In addition to the material displayed in the Museum, you can also browse The Fan Museum Trust collection online. The Museum’s digital database is an ongoing project and staff are working toward improving entries, adding images, rectifying errors & updating research findings at regular intervals. Should you notice any inaccuracies or would like to suggest additions to existing copy, please email the Museum’s curatorial team.
  • Exhibitions: Discover our diverse programme of fan-themed temporary exhibitions. From religion to royalty through to plastics and politics, since first opening to the public in 1991, the Museum’s 85+ temporary exhibitions have covered a breath-taking variety of fan-related topics.
  • Using the Collections: Image reproduction, collections research & related facilities.

Facilities

  • Toilets: Toilets are available inside for Museum visitors on the ground- and first- floors. Accessible toilet facilities can be found on the ground floor along with baby changing facilities.
  • Dogs: Guide dogs are welcome in the Museum, however, no pets are allowed in or around the buildings.

What to see

Events:

  • Museum by Candlelight: Join The Fan Museum in heralding the festive season with the return of a yuletide fan favourite.
  • Dickens at Christmas: Distinguished author and actor, Richard Holliss, in the persona of Charles Dickens, reads extracts from his works by candlelight, in an entertainment written by Wayne Adrian Drew. The event takes place on Friday 19th December 2025, 6:00pm-9:00pm.
  • Fan Making Workshops: We hold regular fan making workshops on the first Saturday afternoon of each month from February until December. These sessions are conducted by an experienced tutor who will not only provide expert guidance, but also a wealth of knowledge about the history and craft of fans.
