Aysgarth aims to provide a broad and balanced education for every pupil, supporting them to make the very most of their potential both in and out of the classroom. Whilst academics are paramount, the School takes great care to ensure that the children have the opportunity to thrive in the fields of sport, music, drama and art. Furthermore, an extensive extracurricular programme allows each child to explore and enjoy activities that fall outside of the normal curriculum, providing further opportunity for them to enjoy themselves whilst developing friendships and building self-confidence.The Aysgarth values of loving and caring for our neighbours as ourselves, making the most of our talents and being courageous in all that they do run through the very heart of the School as we prepare the children for their senior schools and adult life. The importance of kindness, respect and service to others are central to a child’s journey through Aysgarth.Aysgarth is very much a boarding school and boys travel from throughout the country and across the world to join the Aysgarth community. The School is very much a home with all boarders living in the main building and strong pastoral care is at the heart of a healthy and happy community. Day boys and Pre-Prep children are welcomed into the community
Prep School
Aysgarth is one of the leading independent Prep Schools for boys aged 3-13 and girls from 3-8 , where we aim to find the best in every child. The ethos and values develop boys in every respect - to be happy, confident, courteous, independent and ambitious. As the only all-boys boarding Prep School in the north of Britain, Aysgarth sends more boys to selective schools such as Eton, Harrow, Winchester and Radley than any other school in the north as well as to senior schools nearby. They aim high! They aim to stretch every boy to make the most of their abilities in small groups, whatever the activity.
Pre-Prep
Oak House is the co-educational Nursery and Pre-Preparatory Department of Aysgarth School for children ages 3 to 8 years. Oak House provides a happy, busy environment, where the individuality of every child is recognised, and all children are encouraged and supported to make progress in their own way and in their own time. It is located alongside the Prep School allowing the Pre-Prep children to take full advantage of the wonderful grounds and facilities at Aysgarth. The curriculum and the teaching in the Pre-Prep incorporate the best of modern practice, equipment and facilities. They aim to lay sound foundations in literacy and numeracy; to develop an interest in art, music, technology and sport; to teach and demonstrate strong moral values and to ensure that the children enjoy this precious stage of their lives
SPORT
At Aysgarth School we believe that sport is for every individual and from an early age we try to harness fun and enjoyment from the range of activities on offer through expert tuition. We strive for excellence with our top sportsman and teams who compete regionally and nationally whilst still providing the opportunity for all pupils to participate and improve at the level appropriate to them.Sport, of course, plays a key role in developing life skills. Teamwork, communication, testing ourselves to the limit, maintaining concentration and stamina are all important. It is also essential to keep young bodies fit and healthy as they grow. The skills developed at an early age can provide each individual with the ability to stay fit and healthy throughout life.
MUSIC
The timetable at Aysgarth provides for all boys to have the chance to have weekly musical instrument lessons. The staff who teach these lessons are visiting musicians and are exceptionally talented, committed and enthusiastic. The music department is led by Director of Music, Mr. Matthew Atherton. The music department places great importance on instrumental learning and ensemble performance. Playing an instrument is an ideal way to experience the enjoyment of music-making; it helps to develop many personal skills and disciplines, and through playing alongside other pupils it contributes to the development of social skills such as self-awareness, self-confidence and self-discipline.
DRAMA
Drama at Aysgarth aims to inspire boys to be confident, articulate and imaginative individuals. These are qualities that enable boys to win scholarships and achieve places at the public school of their choice. They are also skills of life-long benefit in business and public life and their development is best started when a boy is young. They aim to offer every boy the opportunity to be involved in a variety of productions, from musicals and dramatic productions to competing in drama festivals, as well as the opportunity to develop their skills in scripted and improvised drama. But as well as this they also offer the chance to be involved in all aspects of theatre; set design and lighting, costume, back stage and front of house.
ART
Art is one of the subjects that the boys at Aysgarth enjoy most of all. Children love making things, drawing, painting and making most have gifts in at least one of these areas. Each boy spends time every week in the Creative Art Centre, experiencing art and craft, design and technology lessons. There are also many opportunities in free time to use these extensive facilities to pursue their interests. The ‘Picture of the Week’ award and Annual Art Competition help Art achieve a high profile within the School. Each year they allocate several days to 'Arts Week' when the boys' timetable is focused on visiting exhibitions, participating in workshops with visiting artists and displaying their work around the School.
