Grounded in Christian values, they provide an environment where each child is nurtured and encouraged to develop to their full potential. They celebrate success within and beyond the classroom in a close community, bound by a spirit of endeavour, compassion and enjoyment in everything they do. They believe that girls and boys learn to live and work together best in an unpretentious, open and respectful atmosphere, as befits our school’s foundation and values. They provide a broad and balanced curriculum for all, promoting academic rigour and the rewards of endeavour, the wonder of discovery and the richness that comes from an aptitude for life-long learning. Equally essential to the success of the girls and boys is the development of confidence, integrity, resilience and teamwork, which are learned in a range of sports and a wealth of cultural and co-curricular activities. Pupils also learn a sense of duty, selflessness and the importance of community.

Facilities

Pre-Prep
Incorporating Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, Pre-Prep is where many of our children begin their formal learning journey. Starting school is an exciting time and we ensure all children are offered rich, exhilarating and fun experiences in a safe and friendly environment. Creative curriculums in each of the Pre-Prep classes allow children to be engaged and become independent learners and thinkers. All children develop positive attitudes towards their work and are able to grow in confidence and self-esteem.Small class sizes allow the teachers to give the best education to every child from those needing a little extra help to those who demonstrate exceptional talents that need to be nurtured.

Prep
The education and opportunities offered to children from Year 3-6 reflects their growing maturity, recognises their individual preferences and provides challenge both inside and outside the classroom. With a friendly, encouraging and supportive atmosphere and additional responsibilities, the children thrive. They are well mannered, eager to learn and begin to show a growing sense of independence.

Senior School
The word that comes up most often when people talk about ‘Barney’ is “happy”; visitors highlight our friendly, family atmosphere and lack of pretension. That’s down to the pupils who are confident, compassionate, polite and full of humour and spirit, supported by staff who know and value each boy and girl individually. They promote academic rigour, the rewards of endeavour, the wonder of discovery and the richness of education that teaches children how, rather than what, to think. The nurturing and caring environment ensures that every child finds their niche here and can embrace new challenges and opportunities with confidence.

Features

Things to note

SPORT
Sport is an important aspect of life at Barnard Castle School. It supports our ethos by helping pupils to develop vital skills for life such as commitment, resilience, team-building, confidence, leadership, sportsmanship and learning how to win and lose. They strive, therefore, to provide as many opportunities as possible for our pupils to enjoy a competitive sporting environment at whatever playing level they can achieve. The games programme offers each pupil five lessons of games in their weekly timetable. They also offer an extensive, after school activity programme. Between 4pm-5pm every day students can extend their interest in a particular sport, discover skills in a new sport or simply try something they have never done before. Team practices also take place at this time.

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES
The range of activities that a pupil experiences in their first two years in senior school second to none. All pupils in Years 7 and 8 follow a structured programme named ‘Mind Body and Soul’  three days per week. On Mondays each group of 12 pupils takes part in a ‘Body’ activity. These activities are designed to learn about fitness, or else experience different sporting activities and skills. Examples include Squash, Raft Building, Pool Time and Hockey skills.

CREATIVE ARTS
Creativity in all its forms is encouraged at our school and Music, Drama and Art play a central role in providing pupils with stimulating and rewarding opportunities to develop their creative expression. In addition to timetabled lessons, pupils can choose creative arts subjects as part of the extra-curricular programme, enabling them to develop further the skills they have learned in class.Active involvement helps pupils to develop an enjoyment and understanding of the arts, whether it is in a one-to-one music lesson, as a member of a choir, band or orchestra, taking a leading role on stage, performing as part of a large cast or being part of the back stage or sound and lighting crew in a production. They aim to offer a range of opportunities to ensure there is something to appeal to everyone.
