In addition to maths and English, pupils learn Mandarin Chinese and can also choose to study French, German, Russian, Latin and Spanish. Science is taught as three separate subjects and has dedicated facilities. Pupils also study coding and IT, music, art, design and technology, drama and have an extensive sports timetable
Pre Prep and Prep
The Pre-Prep & Prep School pupils are inquisitive learners. The rich curriculum introduces them to creative and inspired teaching. Their journey through the school prepares the Year 8 pupils for their move to the College in Year 9. The teachers are enthusiastic experts in their subjects, passionate about engaging our children in their particular areas of expertise. Specialist teaching begins in Nursery, introducing our pupils to a wide range of interesting and varied areas of learning, from Mandarin to music, design and technology to dance. The Reception classes are a happy and welcoming group of our Nursery pupils and new children. Their curriculum includes weekly lessons in French, Mandarin, PE and art, taught by the specialist teachers who work closely together as part of an involved and caring teaching team. The children learn to read, write, investigate, count and to support each other. They grow in confidence, make fantastic progress and leap up into Year 1 after their varied foundation year.
Nursery
The bright and spacious Nursery forms part of our Pre-Prep in the heart of Kemptown. Purpose-built to educate younger children in their preparation for Reception, it houses two Nursery learning spaces: a playground and a large playing field. Children are taught by highly qualified and experienced primary teachers. The groups are small, allowing us to really get to know your child. The Nursery is beautifully resourced with high quality learning equipment and toys. The Early Years curriculum ensures that each individual child makes excellent progress. Children have specialist music and PE lessons each week. They serve delicious and nutritious hot lunches every day. Children benefit from our fun outdoor learning curriculum. They have a flexible morning drop off time from 8.00.
Sport
At Brighton College our ethos is very much about sport for everyone. We cater for all pupils, and for those who enjoy competitive games they are one of the leading sporting schools in England. They firmly believe that all pupils deserve the opportunity to enjoy sport, regardless of their ability. By devoting time and attention to those who are less confident as well as to those with more experience, they develop life skills that bring resilience and success beyond school life. We also offer PE at GCSE and PE (Sports Science) at A-level.
Art
At Brighton College we know that participation in the arts is vital in order to nurture the creativity, passion and individuality of each child. This enlivens and complements the academic life of the school in a very special way. The arts calendar is full of a range of music, dance, art and drama events in which pupils may get involved. This includes the annual musical in November, a carol service, regular music recitals and art exhibitions, and pupil-directed plays.
Enrichment
The children know there is a whole world beyond the classroom. They encourage them to remember they are a part of the world - not apart from it. With this in mind, lessons finish from 3.15pm so that the boys and girls can pursue their interests in the many co-curricular activities available. They're also committed to teaching them about their community beyond school. Through charity initiatives, the school council and pupil-led fundraising, they ensure the children learn to make a meaningful difference.
