Brighton & Hove Montessori School is Independent Primary school in Brighton and Hove for kids aged 2 to 12 (Gender - Mixed )
The Brighton & Hove Montessori School was established in 1985 to welcome children into an inviting learning environment where, with guidance of experienced AMI Montessori teachers, they can develop their potentials and lay the foundations for life as independent, confident and responsible citizens of the world. At Brighton and Hove Montessori School children are in groups of 2 1/2 - 6 year olds and 6-12 year olds. Children spontaneously help each other and enthusiastically share skills and knowledge and each child’s effort is respected and considered. The teacher gives individual and group presentations introducing the Montessori curriculum resources and techniques for learning. Each child practices, explores and learns in whatever way best suits them. Child and teacher have frequent one to one sessions, recording accomplishments, analysing challenges, promoting wellbeing and progressing to next steps.
Children's House for ages 2 1/2 - 6 years
The Montessori Curriculum is based on how children develop, our equipment and activities meet the needs of each individual child, with lots of opportunity for practising positive social skills and problem solving. They recognise that the child of 2 1/2 - 6 years is developing their personality and attitudes to the world, has an urge to acquire skills for independence and a thirst for knowledge about the world in which they live. They provide a calm, stimulating and positive atmosphere for early learning and self/social development. As the age groups mix through the classrooms children choose their own work and learn from each other. Older children are willing and able to help their younger friends, while the younger children have the opportunity to observe and join in with older peers to the satisfaction of all.
Elementary Group age 6-12
The elementary group covers and extends the National Curriculum, allowing each child to work at their own pace and in their own way. Children are supported to develop learning skills and explore subjects in ways that interest and inspire them, individually and as a group. They ensure all children get relevant access to IT equipment and the best resources to support their needs. They often take the work outside in our garden as well as taking care of planting and wildlife there. Research to extend on the curriculum resources is encouraged with frequent trips to the library and local sites of interest such as the beach and countryside. We aim for regular trips to places such as the British Museum, the Royal Observatory and Natural History Museum, which the children play a key role in organising.
Montessori World Wide
Here at BHMS they find commonality with authentic Montessori practice internationally. They are inspired with world-wide developments building on examples of projects which have emerged in the USA, Kenya, Australia and even in the UK!Some of the past and potentially future projects include state funded Montessori education and a Montessori Adolescent Community, for students aged 12-18.
