Cambridge Steiner School is a vibrant and stimulating learning environment. It is a great privilege to be Education Manager, leading our wonderful staff. Cambridge Steiner School is a small non-selective, co-educational independent school and is part of the Steiner Waldorf Schools Fellowship. They provide a dynamic and progressive education for children aged 2 to 16 years. Situated on a single site, located on the outskirts of Cambridge in the delightful village of Fulbourn, they welcome children from all over Cambridgeshire and beyond. At the Cambridge Steiner School, they strive to give children the gift of an education that will nourish the whole life of the child. To this end, the academic, social, moral, and spiritual growth of every child is held as a central objective of our education. Children’s capacities and personal abilities are helped to unfold by providing them with a rich and carefully planned curriculum that enhances their own natural developmental growth.
Early Years (2 to 6 years)
'Play is the work of early childhood', The Early Years/Kindergarten curriculum is carefully structured to meet the developmental needs of the child. Following many European educational models, the Steiner Waldorf school does not introduce the teaching of formal concepts until a child’s seventh year. Kindergarten years are filled with a healthy balance of engaging activities and self-directed play, much of it out-of-doors, all specially designed to prepare the ground as fully as possible for the start of formal learning.
Lower School
In a Steiner school, mathematical aptitude, scientific understanding, and the love of reading and writing are developed in every child in a slightly different way to conventional education. They are combined and enriched with storytelling and physical and artistic activities, providing the strongest possible connection to the material – which stays with the child for life. The children have the opportunity to experience different phenomena for themselves, and to make their own discoveries. This increases their understanding and enthusiasm for learning. Research* shows that there are great benefits in introducing formal learning around the age of 6 or 7. This is precisely when literacy teaching is introduced in Steiner Waldorf schools. By this age, children have acquired a firm foundation in language development and have the necessary physical and social skills and a joy for learning.

The Upper School provides an opportunity for young people to take part in a challenging and transformative programme of integrated education designed to support healthy, balanced development and the acquisition of a wide range of skills. The curriculum has a focus on sustainability and includes:Natural sciences, Mathematics, Computing, Language & literature, Global awareness, Outdoor education, Art, craft & design, Movement & physical education, Performing arts
Outdoor Education
The outdoor education programme is a fundamental part of the Cambridge Steiner School’s curriculum. It is in line with the ethos of the school where experiential learning outdoors is considered to be a vital part of the education and healthy development of children. In outdoor classroom lessons, the children engage in experiential learning in connection with a subject they study in the classroom. This includes both humanities subjects, such as geography and history, and the natural sciences, including geology, physics, chemistry, the study of nature and astronomy.
Crafts
Through crafts children are exposed to different traditions of craftsmanship. They become familiar with the materials of a craft and gain knowledge of working with them. Children learn how to use different tools, including edge tools such as wood carving knives and saws, exercising caution and focus and paying attention to detail. Crafts also serve as a rich resource to complement history, science lessons and math. Through crafts children study and gain knowledge of the industry of which the craft is a part, learning about the history and social history of different times.
