Description

Leweston School is an independent day and boarding school near Sherborne in Dorset, England. Co-educational in the Nursery and Preparatory School and co-educational, diamond model in the Senior School and Sixth Form. The School consists of a Nursery (3 mths - 4yrs), Prep School (4-11 yrs), Senior School (11-16 yrs) and Sixth Form (16-18 yrs).

Facilities

  • The Prep and Senior School share the Theatre, Dining Hall and Chapel which are all on the Senior site.
  • The Art and Design Centre is available to pupils from Nursery upwards and houses two fine art studios, two Sixth Form studios, a pottery workshop, creative computer suite, dark room, sewing room and design studio. Whilst the purpose built Senior Science Centre houses three laboratories, a project room and preparation room.
  • The new Music School opened in the Manor House in September 2019. The purpose built renovation provides an ensemble room, two music classrooms, instrumental teaching rooms, GCSE and A Level Music work space and a recording studio.
  • Leweston excellent sports facilities are aided by the acres of grounds in which the school sits. There is an all-weather hockey pitch which also provides a nine tennis courts in the summer, a sports hall which acts as both an indoor netball and hockey court, provides four badminton courts. Other facilities include six netball courts, six hard surface tennis courts; an indoor heated swimming pool, 300m grass track and synthetic long jump.

Things to note

  • Art and Design are taught as part of the curriculum from Reception to Year 6. From Year 4 pupils have weekly Fine Art lessons with a subject specialist and Design is part of the creative carousel along with Design Technology and Home Economics.
  • Music plays a significant role in the life of  Leweston Prep. The Prep’s Chapel Choir, drawn from Years Five and Six, leads the weekly whole-school Mass and prepares for special performances throughout the year. 
  • Drama is a lively, dynamic subject at Leweston and an important part of school life. By participating in the many and varied productions pupils learn not only about themselves but about the world around them. 
  • Sport is an important part of life at Leweston Prep. The extensive grounds, sports hall and indoor swimming pool provide us with excellent facilities and all pupils are encouraged to join in with a wide variety of options.
  • Life at Leweston is a busy one, all pupils are encouraged to take part in a number of activities outside their normal academic, musical and sporting commitments and Leweston offers a choice of over 50 different activities, clubs and societies each term.
  • Leweston is gaining a reputation as a serious competitor in equestrian sport and pupils of all ages regularly compete at NSEA events.Leweston has 27 students drawn from both the Prep and Senior Schools currently registered as competitive riders.

Admission Details

Joining the Prep: There will be an informal assessment in literacy and numeracy at this time which typically forms part of a joined lesson. After a successful taster we will request a reference from your current school.

Joining Year 7: The school assessments consist of short entrance test in Maths, Writing, Reading Comprehension and Non-Verbal Reasoning. The exams take approximately two hours to complete. The tests are set by the school and a practice paper will be available from the Registrar in advance. After the assessments all pupils are invited to stay for lunch after which they can return home. 

Joining Year 9: Some pupils joining Leweston from independent preparatory schools take Common Entrance exams which are sent to Leweston for marking, however Common Entrance is not a requirement for admissions process.

Joining the Sixth Form: The standard entry requirement for students entering Sixth Form is 6 GCSEs at grade 5 or above with a grade 7 or above in the subjects they wish to pursue at A Level.  

Joining from Overseas: For entry into Sixth Form, your child would normally be expected to offer one of the following qualifications at pass level or above – GSCE English, IGCSE English as a second language, IELTS band 5.5 or any other equivalent EAL qualification. The standard entry requirement for all students entering Sixth Form is 6 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade 5 or above with grade 7 or above in the subjects your child wishes to pursue at A Level or Pre-U.

Scholarships

Scholarships are available for Academic Excellence and in Art and Design, Equestrian, Music, Drama, Sport and Pentathlon. Please be advised that candidates can apply for only one scholarship. There are also two boarding scholarships open to UK full boarders looking to join Sixth Form.

Applications for scholarship are invited from external candidates at Years 7, 9 or Sixth Form.
