As an Independent School in Surrey, they are united in a passion to maximise the potential and development of each child. Located in stunning grounds near to Esher, they provide a private Pre-Prep and Prep school education for children aged between 4 and 13 years. They create memories, celebrate diversity and offer inspirational teaching that is reflected in the outstanding academic results.Children of all faiths and backgrounds are welcome at Milbourne and all are expected to be tolerant and to appreciate and respect differences. The school comes together at a regular morning assembly where we engender a sense of the school as a family and celebrate the achievements of our talented pupils. In everything they do the boys and girls learn to work and play together harmoniously, supporting and encouraging one another.
Reception – Ages 4 to 5
The goal is to enhance this core curriculum by providing challenging, fun opportunities for learning, while maintaining a strong emphasis on acquiring the basic tools vital to early schooling. We always remember that every day is an adventure and a time of discovery. However, they carefully structure the work to help children develop their skills and relationships. This enables them to reach their Early Learning Goals by the end of the Reception year. In fact most of the children exceed them.
Years 1 & 2 – Ages 5 to 7
In Year 1, the curriculum underscores the significant learning which needs to take place. Teaching and learning opportunities encourage active engagement, motivation and depth of learning. Quality experiences also help develop the right attributes and capabilities that are so important to our pupils throughout their school life. They build on the enjoyment and enthusiasm for learning fostered in Reception. The curriculum draws on the best elements of traditional teaching, with a strong emphasis on literacy and numeracy. It is strongly supported by a broad range of subjects and activities designed to widen horizons and develop children’s imaginations. Subject areas include History, Geography, Science, French, RE, Art, Design and Technology and Computing.
Years 3 & 4 – Ages 7 to 9
Children enter the Prep school in Year 3 and the year group comprises two parallel classes. Both classes will be taught the majority of their lessons by their respective Form Tutor but will have specialist teachers for French, Science, Art, IT and Music. This gives pupils the security of working with their Form Tutor alongside opportunities to develop and branch out under the guidance of others. In Year 4, the year group is introduced to specialist subjects such as Latin. Pupils can then begin to fine-tune their interests.
Years 5 & 6 – Ages 9 to 11
Pre-Testing for entry to Senior Schools takes place in the Autumn Term of Year 6. Pupils are therefore prepared from Year 5 for the various requirements for this. Pupils receive designated lessons that focus on Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning, along with significant preparation for the different styles of interview which they will inevitably face. It is our aim in these crucial years to ensure our pupils feel confident and ready for the rigours of Pre-Testing. However, this does not take away from the curriculum’s breadth and depth. The pupils have many opportunities to express themselves in Art, IT, Music, Sport and during Extra-Curricular activities such as Debate Club, Chatterbooks and Drama Club.
Years 7 & 8 – Ages 11 to 13
The curriculum for the final two years in the Prep School is planned around preparing pupils for the rigours of Senior School life and preparing some for Scholarship examinations. All the boys and girls attain the highest academic standards required to enter the best Independent Senior Schools in the country and they move smoothly from Milbourne to the next stage of their education. They know that the children really thrive on the opportunities and the possibilities opened up to them as they explore, connect and develop on a rich diet of academic stimulus and regular outdoor activities.
Sport
Every day the children enjoy a genuine hour of physical activity come rain or shine. They want the pupils to be well-rounded and tough, both willing and able to get stuck in. They love getting wet, muddy and really enjoy the outdoor life. There are a wide range of sports on offer. The boys play Football in the Autumn Term, Rugby in the Spring Term, and Cricket, Swimming, Tennis and Athletics in the Summer Term. Girls play Netball and Hockey during the Autumn and Spring Terms, as well as Cricket, Athletics, Tennis and Swimming throughout the Summer Term. Milbourne also has its own heated open-air swimming pool, which is used throughout the summer and early autumn months. An all-weather surface facilitates sporting activities all year round.
Music
Music is seen as an integral part of the curriculum at Milbourne Lodge. Learning to play and appreciate music can encourage participation, teamwork, and a sense of group identity as well as increasing creativity.Music develops the children’s ability to understand themselves and relate to others, thus promoting self-confidence and social skills. It can also support learning in other subject areas. The ability to listen and concentrate and the facility for self-expression are useful life skills. The teaching of music in class is primarily aimed at developing the children’s understanding and appreciation of the subject. Pupils’ natural musicianship skills are developed and honed through singing and aural work (to develop musical memory, the inner ear and a true sense of pitch), use of classroom percussion (to develop a sense of rhythm and pulse) and through exploring the four main pillars of the music curriculum: performing, composing, listening and appraising.

They currently offer a wide range of Extra-Curricular activities including: Chess, Judo, PlayBall, Performing Arts, LAMDA Speech & Drama, Gardening Club (summer term), Golf Club, Cricket Nets, Debate Club, Chatterbooks, Senior Book Club, MTech, Cross Country Running Club, Science Club and Swimming Club. Our Sports department also offers a range of squads and clubs and the Music department arranges instrumental tuition along with orchestras and choirs.
