St Benedict's Catholic School is a State Secondary school for kids aged 11 to 18 (Gender - Mixed)
St Benedict's is a comprehensive secondary school of about 740 boys and girls aged from 11 to 18 years. The school serves the Catholic communities of West Suffolk and Thetford and gives priority for admissions to children who are baptised Catholics, but has always welcomed others who wish to gain from and participate in the Christian life of the school. St. Benedict’s is situated on the outskirts of Bury St Edmunds and is readily accessible by car or public transport. The school has six acres of playing fields and the accommodation is spacious and under constant improvement. There are specialist suites for all subject departments. The School Library has been transformed into a Learning Resource Centre with the addition of a suite of computers. In addition to the Learning Resource Centre, there are 5 more dedicated Computer suites, making St. Benedict’s one of the best-equipped schools for ICT in the area. Remodelling the School Hall enhances our facilities for Sport, Drama and Worship, as does the addition of a Fitness Studio to enhance sport and promote healthy lifestyles.
Curriculum
At St Benedict’s the curriculum is structured in order to inform and support the practise of the Catholic faith through shared Gospel values. These ambitious values ensure that young people achieve the full potential God has for them, irrespective of ability, background or personal circumstances. Through the curriculum we seek to provide young people with the relevant knowledge, understanding and Cultural Capital to inspire their future learning and careers and which enables them to play an active part in society, whatever their background. The curriculum enables young people to seek truth and wisdom in their own lives and look beyond the superficial and misleading.
SEND
At St. Benedict’s, they aim to ensure that all children are able to access the curriculum and make the maximum progress they are capable of achieving whatever their area or level of need. We are an inclusive school that identifies and celebrates the strengths and achievements of all pupils including those with disabilities. Pupils with disabilities are fully included in their class, with reasonable steps taken to ensure they can physically, socially and emotionally access all areas of the curriculum and are seen as a valued member of their class by both their teachers and peers. They work closely with parents and pupils to ensure the best help is given and they follow a child centred approach; for example, they hold Pupil Perception interviews where children with SEND are asked how they feel about the help that is given to them and what helps them best with their learning; they also involve them as much as possible with their education using the One Page Profile.
Extra Curricular Clubs
Students are expected to participate in at least one extracurricular activity or club over the course of each half-term with many taking advantage of the selection on offer and enroling in multiple opportunities. Clubs cover a wide range of activities in school with opportunities to develop your musical talents in Orchestra, your athletic skills with the range of sports teams, your language skills or cultural knowledge, there are many clubs and opportunities to do so.
