St John’s College is a co-ed independent day and boarding school for children aged 4 – 18, located in the heart of Southsea.

Things to note

Admission Details

Reception to Year 6: Pupils joining the Lower and Middle Schools up to year 6 will be visually assessed during their taster day and feedback will be given by their classroom teacher. 

Year 7 & Year 9 Entry: Entrance assessments for pupils joining Year 7 and Year 9 generally take place in January of each year and include English, Maths, and Non-Verbal Reasoning. They can also be held at any time of the year, on an individual basis, although those applying for scholarships and bursaries will need to take the assessments by January at the latest for September intake. This year they will be offering a Candidate day to all those pupils who are attending the group assessments in January. 

Year 8: Entrance assessments for pupils joining Year 8 can be held at any time of the year, on an individual basis. The assessments will include English, Maths, and Non-verbal reasoning.

Sixth Form Entry: Pupils wishing to join Sixth form from within the UK are not required to complete formal assessments but are asked to complete an application form and to provide with academic reports and references from their current school. Pupils applying from overseas will be asked to provide academic reports and references from their current school and take a formal assessment in English, Maths (and Science if Year 9 or Year 10 entry).

Scholarships

Invitations for Academic Scholarships are issued to those pupils who perform well in the Entrance Assessment. Criteria for other scholarships are available on request from Admissions Registrar. For a number of years St John’s College has run a programme designed with those pupils in mind who have been awarded academic scholarships or identified as possessing a particular aptitude in specific subject areas.
