Reception
Reception is an exciting year for all children, where they will develop a strong foundation from which the rest of their education will flow. Through the introduction of the fundamental skills of reading, writing and numeracy, as well as the nurturing and encouragement of talents and enthusiasm, we see the children flourish. The children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum which defines the standards all schools must meet for children up to the age of 5. Through a varied provision of indoor and outdoor activities, the curriculum gives the children a positive introduction to the world of education.

Pre-Prep (Key Stage 1; Years 1 & 2)
The curriculum provides an exciting, fun and ‘hands-on’ approach to learning in Years 1 and 2. The curriculum challenges each child to use their imagination, to enquire, to hypothesise and to learn independently. We offer excellence in English and Mathematics, whilst providing an enhanced curriculum to ensure that every child receives the very best academic exposure and education. Each morning begins with phonics, literacy and numeracy to focus on the essential building blocks of reading, spelling, writing and mathematical skills. Children are encouraged to apply these areas through a wider and carefully constructed curriculum in Science, Humanities, RE, Computing, Drama, PSHEE (Personal, Social, Health, Economic Education) and Critical Thinking. Specialist teaching is delivered in Spanish, Art, Music, PE and Swimming. Regular trips, workshops and activity days are used throughout Pre-Prep to broaden each child’s experience.

Prep (Key Stage 2; Years 3-6)
In Prep, the children continue to study an enhanced, balanced curriculum. It is designed to challenge and to inspire them. Emphasis is placed on the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science and this is complemented by an extensive range of subjects to develop your child’s thirst for learning in Humanities, RE, Computing, PSHEE (Personal, Social, Health, Economic Education) and Critical Thinking. Specialist teaching continues in Spanish, French, Art, Music, PE and Games.Life Skills is introduced in Prep and the programme is built around the introduction and practice of a range of ‘life skills’, from climbing to life saving, British Sign Language to Drama, Debating to Independent StudySkills.

Things to note

Art
A love of art runs throughout SPSP and our corridors are alive with the children’s work. It shows their creativity, their vitality and their resilience. From Year 1, children have specialist art lessons each week, focusing on a range of different techniques, media and it is linked to cross-curricular topics being studied by the children in other areas of the curriculum.

Musical & Drama Performances
All children at SPSP take part in a range of productions each year. All classes deliver a ‘Parents’ Assembly’ on a chosen theme. In addition, the children develop a love of acting, starting with ‘The Nativity’ in Reception, followed by a variety of plays and musicals throughout their school life. In addition, the children perform their very own pantomime to the school. The productions take place on our own fully lit stage and create magical memories for parents, grandparents and children alike. ISI recognised the strength this approach gives our children and noted that 'from Reception onwards, every pupil is involved in drama productions, choirs and ensembles, resulting in high standards of achievement from the very youngest in the performing arts' having enjoyed the Year 3 and 4 play, ‘Alice in Wonderland’.

Sport
PE is an important part of life at SPSP and plays a major role in our curriculum. It is integral in supporting the children’s health and well being as well as their fitness. It encourages independence, teamwork, resilience, sportsmanship and fair play. Throughout the school, a varied programme is delivered by a team of specialists to allow each and every child to develop their fundamental skills, to experience a wide range of activity and find a form of physical activity they can enjoy.
