Description

St Swithun's School is an independent day, weekly and full-boarding school for girls in Winchester for ages 3 to 18 years.

Facilities

  • The 45 acre site offers inspiring views over the countryside of the Hampshire Downs but is only 50 minutes away from London by train and is easily accessible by car.
  • The school buildings are modern and well-equipped. As well as academic classrooms and science laboratories, there is a magnificent performing arts centre with a 600-seat auditorium, a music school, an art and technology block, a sports hall and a full-size indoor swimming pool. There is an impressive library and ICT facility. The grounds are spacious and encompass sports fields, an athletics track with all-weather jumping and throwing areas, tennis courts and gardens.
  • The senior school has six boarding houses for its full and weekly boarders, with separate houses for those in their first year and those in the upper sixth. 
  • The prep school is a light, bright, modern space with specialist teaching rooms, a science laboratory, an art studio, a media/computing room, a performing arts space, a music room, design and technology facilities and a gym. As well as access to the swimming pool, the prep school has dedicated sporting facilities including netball and tennis courts and marked-out areas for athletics, rounders and lacrosse.

  • Throughout the school year, they raise both awareness of and funds for a number of charities and the children are encouraged to take the initiative. 
  • They offer co-curricular sporting opportunities suitable for all levels. There is a lunchtime running club, gymnastics training and group tennis sessions. All sports are led by a specialist coach.
  • During School holidays Lettings and Event team invite SuperCamps onto site to run holiday activities for 4-11 year olds.

Selection Criteria: Selective

Admission Details

For preschool and reception classes, there is no formal assessment for entry, assuming children can access the curriculum. 

  • For years 1 to 3, where assessment and familiarisation days are currently not available, entry is at the head's discretion based on the prospective student's latest school report, recent assessment results and (where applicable) educational psychology report.
  • For year 3 entry to the school in September 2023, parents are invited to arrange to visit the school now before registering their daughter for day of fun practical and academic assessments which will take place this November.
  • For years 4 and 5, in addition to the information above, prospective students will be required to sit a Cognitive Ability Test (CAT4) online to determine their learning pattern and academic potential.
  • Application to the school is made via submission of a completed online registration form which is  available from the admissions team. To register there is a £75 non-refundable fee.
  • Assuming places are available, mid-year entry is also welcome for the majority of year groups. When a place is offered for a child, a deposit of £500 is required to secure this. (£250 of which will be offset against the first term’s fees for those taking up a place. The remaining £250 is deducted from the final term’s fees).

The senior school has entry points at 11+, 13+ and 16+.

  • Registration for 11+ (year 7) is by the summer of the child’s year 5. UK-based candidates take own entry papers in English and mathematics during an assessment day at St Swithun’s in that November. 
  • Registration for 13+ (year 9) should be completed by the end of the child’s year 6. Candidates seeking early offers are pre-tested in the November of their year 7. Overseas-based candidates should provide a recent full Ukiset report by 31 October of UK year 7. All candidates with later applications are tested in the November of their year 8.
  • Registration for 16+ (year 12) should be completed by the end of September in year 11.

Registration is made by completing an online application link which is sent from the registrar once a candidate has enquired via our website. The registration fee is £250 and is non-refundable.

Prep School Fees For The 2022/23 School Year Will Be:

Preschool   £3,968 (all day) per term

Senior School Fees For The 2022/23 School Year Are:

Boarder   £12,780 per term
Day girl   £7,598 per term 

Scholarships

Academic: They offer academic scholarships at 11+, 13+ and 16+. These carry a fee subsidy of up to 20% and are awarded at the discretion of the scholarship awards committee.

Music: Music scholarships and exhibitions may be awarded each year to suitable applicants at 11+, 13+ and 16+. Scholarships carry a fee subsidy of up to 20% and cover music tuition on two instruments, per annum, for the duration of the award. Music Exhibitions cover music tuition on one instrument, per annum, for the duration of the award.

Sports scholarships: Sports scholarships are awarded at the end of Year 9 when they believe that all girls, whether they joined in Year 7 or Year 9, will have had the opportunity to develop skills in all of the sports that they offer. Sports scholarships are also available at 16+ for internal and external candidates.
