The London Oratory School

7-18 Years

Description

The London Oratory School, also known as "The Oratory" or "The London Oratory" to distinguish it from other schools, is a Catholic secondary school for boys aged 7–18 and girls aged 16–18 in West Brompton.

Facilities

The Junior House: In order to provide an outstanding quality of liturgy to the spiritual life of the school, the Junior House was opened in 1996, offering a specialist music education to boys aged 7-10 with a focus on choral liturgical music.  Pupils are selected on the basis of musical aptitude, and they are required to take part in musical and choral activities arranged outside normal school hours, including weekends and holidays, and to learn at least one musical instrument.

The Senior School: Open to boys  aged 11 to 16, this is the core of the school, numbering over 850 pupils. From its earliest days in the 19th Century, it has always drawn pupils from all social backgrounds and a wide catchment area, now stretching throughout Greater London and beyond. It provides a well-structured, disciplined environment that offers boys affirmation and encouragement, while demanding high expectations in behaviour and tolerance towards each other, as they learn to acquire the virtues which equip them to contribute to society in a spirit of generosity.

The Sixth Form: In the Sixth Form, the school opens its doors to welcome other boys and girls who want to complete their education by profiting from the distinctive formation which our school provides, and who are happy to embrace the traditional culture which they find with us.

Features

Things to note

Drama: Drama has a long and venerable tradition at The London Oratory School; not only that, London Oratorians are numbered amongst the Great and the Good of the acting glitterati, having first swashed their buckle upon the boards of Seagrave Road! In our thrice yearly annual productions, pupils enjoy exposure to a full range of repertoire, from the light-hearted and whimsical, to the serious and challenging, from the lyrical and musical, to the tragic and comical.

Music: Complete immersion in music! All boys sing in the Junior House Choir, and many are members of the Schola Cantorum. All pupils learn the piano and an orchestral instrument, and play in an orchestra. There are plenty of opportunities for solo performance, within school and in public. Every year there are two major concerts, two chamber concerts, and the Junior House puts on an annual musical.

Sport: Thus, the point of sport at the Oratory is primarily to provide a healthy, balanced, joyful context in which good character can be developed, and where sport can become a life-long part of a pupil's life. As such, we provide an introduction to a range of sports, balancing out the needs of diversification with specialisation, and the needs of elite performance with those of wider participation. In terms of our specialist sports, in the Michaelmas Term, we focus on rugby, at which the School has a long and distinguished history. In the Lent Term we shift to Hockey and Water Polo, with some soccer. In the Trinity Term, pupils engage in Cricket and Athletics.
