Pre-Prep Department
They are very proud of the Pre-Prep. There is a wonderful, friendly and purposeful atmosphere that pervades the modern, purpose-built learning environment. There are six classrooms and a well-stocked library in a light, airy and spacious building. This was referred to in our last inspection report in glowing terms.“The accommodation in the Pre-Prep building is excellent in almost every respect. The rooms themselves are complimented by an imaginative use of outside areas to create a special learning resource loved by children and teachers alike.”There are six classes in the Pre-Prep department – two Reception, two Year 1, two Year 2.
Prep Department
Welcome to the Prep School. In Year 3 pupils progress to the charm of the old Beveree building where they can experience the delights of well-equipped subject rooms including a fully networked, modernised ICT room and a professionally designed and purpose built Science laboratory. The Music facilities, built in 2012, complete with peripetitic teaching rooms offer a bright and spacious learning environment alongside a flexible classroom used for English and Drama. In 2020 we proudly opened the new building, "The Hub" at 51, High St in Hampton. This fantastic new facility has transformed our Art and Design facilities and provided additional bright and modern classrooms for the senior pupils.
Senior Prep
The Year 7 and Year 8 boys benefit from an additional two years at the school where they are taught in small groups to ensure excellent academic development in a wide variety of subject areas, taught by specialist teachers. This ensures the continuation of success at Common Entrance to the most academic, selective schools in the area.Pastoral care is an important element of our programme with mixed Year 7-8 tutor groups and many opportunities to develop leadership skills and take responsibility in a wide variety of areas and activities. There is also an emphasis on sport with at least two Games afternoons each week and the opportunity for all boys to represent the school in the major sports of football, rugby and cricket; but also the opportunity to develop skills in activities such as basketball, squash and fitness training.
Art and DT
Art and design are highly valued and exciting components of the TPS curriculum. Lessons aim to stimulate the pupils’ creativity and imagination and enable them to communicate what they see, think and feel by using colour, form, pattern and a wide variety of materials and processes.The well-resourced art and design facilities are housed in our newly rennovated building, The Hub located at 51, High St, Hampton. The new art and design room has a spacious teaching area with specialist equipment used weekly by the pupils from Year 3 upwards.
Sport
Involvement in sport is an essential part of each child’s development. At TPS we aim to offer a wide variety of opportunities for children to try different sports, encouraging each individual to extend his/her ability. From Reception children have specialist PE lessons. In Pre-Prep the children will engage in a variety of learning activities which include dance, gymnastics, games and swimming for Year 1 and Year 2.In Year 3 pupils have one PE lesson and two afternoons of Games each week, which includes swimming. During Games lessons the boys participate in football, rugby and cricket and the girls in netball, hockey and rounders. Outside coaches also provide additional specialist coaching.
Music
Music is a vehicle of personal expression and creativity, and it plays an important part in the development of children. Experiencing the joy of performing and creating music in groups is at the core of the Music teaching ethos at Twickenham Prep. Pupils have specialist class lessons from Reception right up to Year 8 in our dedicated music rooms, and have the opportunity to sing and play a range of instruments together. A wide range of peripatetic music lessons are available. Current instruments offered include vocal training, piano, guitar, violin, cello, drums, ukulele, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trombone and trumpet.
Drama
Children love to rehearse and perform both individually and in groups at TPS. They see this as key area in which children can learn creative and co-operative techniques as well as develop their confidence, imagination and story-telling skills. There is particular emphasis on developing vocal and physical technique as well as an awareness of using the stage space in an engaging manner for an audience.
Trips and Activities
Trips and activity days support the curriculum but also offer the pupils chances to try new activities, develop new skills and take part in team-building days.From Year 4 the pupils have the opportunity to go on residential activity trips. Year 4 and Year 5 pupils travel to a PGL centre, Year 6 pupils go to France, and Year 7 and Year 8 boys take part in an outdoor adventure week in the UK.There are also a wide variety of extra-curricular activities over the course of the academic year, with many after-school clubs, such as chess, coding, drama, fencing, karate, touch typing, tennis, football and netball. Wraparound care, including Breakfast Club, is also available from 8am–6pm.
Clubs
There are a wide range of clubs on offer at TPS. Pupils from Year 1 to Year 8 are encouraged to join different clubs each term. Some of these clubs are organised and run by outside groups and provide high quality coaching and tuition in a variety of activities. In addition to these, all TPS teachers offer an after-school club each term. In the Pre-Prep these run from 3.30pm to 4.00pm and in the Prep School from 4.00pm to 4.45pm/5.00pm.
