Waldegrave School is leading State Secondary school in Twickenham. This is a Non-selective school for kids age 11 to 18 years. Gender - Mixed
Waldegrave has much to offer young adults of the future. We set high standards of behaviour and have high expectations of all of our students. They are proud of the partnership we have with parents to ensure all students reach their full potential and enjoy school. Ofsted reported in 2018 that this is an outstanding school. Our examination results are excellent and reflect the work of committed staff and students. This success has placed the school on the Sunday Times Parent Power list for many years and in 2016 we were named Comprehensive school of the year. Waldegrave School, however, has much more to offer than examination results. We firmly believe that the most successful students are those who really throw themselves into the life of the school. The opportunities here are many and varied and all students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and make the most of leadership opportunities they are given both in and out of lessons.
The Curriculum at Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9)
At Key Stage 3 all schemes of work are based on the 2014 National Curriculum where that exists. Students are usually taught in mixed ability classes except in mathematics (in previous years the Y7 and Y8 cohorts have been mixed ability and this change is partially in response to covid). In Year 7 the PDC (Personal Development and Citizenship) curriculum is delivered through tutor periods and occasional “drop down” sessions, Y8 and Y9 have a dedicated PDC lesson each week. In Y9 all students start their GCSE syllabi in mathematics and RE.
The Curriculum at Key Stage 5
Theyder offer an academic programme of A levels. Most students study 3 A levels and some gifted students study one extra subject. Year 12 students also engage in an enrichment programme and all students have opportunities to develop leadership skills and experience. Some Year 13 students work towards the EPQ (worth half an A level in UCAS points) as an additional qualification or in place of an A level. Further details of the sixth form curriculum are on the school website. The PDC curriculum is delivered through assemblies and tutor periods.
Sixth Form
Your experience of sixth form will shape the way you engage with the world. We aim to educate the leaders of the future and you will be encouraged to make a difference whilst you study with us. The teaching at Waldegrave is already outstanding and in the sixth form you will be able to benefit from our teachers’ extensive experience and deep subject knowledge. Teachers will inspire you in the specialist subjects that you have chosen, ignite your imagination, fuel your spirit of enquiry and create an atmosphere of discovery in the classroom.
Drama
Each year the drama department creates a range of opportunities for students to extend their experience of drama beyond the classroom. Recent events have included theatre visits, workshops, an Evening of Shakespeare and performance projects and Year 12 students have staged their own original writing. In Year 7 students can join an externally led after school club for which there is a fee which is advertised during the year.
Music
The Waldegrave Music Department prides itself on offering a co-curriculum which is both inclusive and diverse. We offer a wide range of different musical groups including 3 choirs, Uketopia, Rock Club, Senior Orchestra, Swing Band, String Orchestra and many more. All of these groups run throughout the school week and are free of charge.
Sports
There are a wide variety of extra-curricular sporting opportunities for pupils. Each half term a calendar of activities is published and any student is welcome to attend regardless of ability or experience. Clubs run before school, at lunchtime and after school. We work in partnership with local sports clubs to further enhance the experience of pupils and to offer pathways into clubs and competition. These include Hampton and Richmond Football club and Richmond Knights Basketball Club. The school participates in the Richmond School Sport Partnership competitions. This offers leagues and tournaments in a large number of sports over the course of the school year.
